It's been nearly a year since I posted, and over a year since I posted anything meaningful. As it has been for most, so it has been for me, a challenging year. That is the best and most positive thing I have to say about the last few years. Challenging. Physically, emotionally, socially, societally and spiritually.

I could spend a lot of words explaining my personal situation, and some would relate, while others would not. I often take January as both a time for reflection and renewal while also struggling with the cold and the dark. I will usually start some physical challenge to trick myself into being entertained until the light comes back. But, I feel like I have been stuck in a perpetual January for two years. I know many also struggle with that.

I have spoken with and heard from so many about the fear and anxiety they have struggled with. The depression is hard to fight when you don't know what to hold onto. In this new world of Covid, of divide, of uncertainty, so many have been left floundering. I have not been immune to that.

If I can be permitted a moment of vulnerability, I started therapy during this time. In one of my sessions, my therapist recommended I consider my core beliefs and center around that. We were not talking about running, but this concept is something that I think we all can employ to feel some solid ground beneath our feet.

So, as I feel the whirlwind whip up around me, I remember my core. I tied my shoes and put my feet to pavement today. It was hard, it was slow, but it was forward and it was the first steps of the year back to me.

Hey, running friends!!

The local 5th grade FLL team made it to state!!! If you know anything about FLL you know this is a big deal. If you don’t, look it up. It’s an amazing organization and program that all three of my kids have benefitted from.

Anyway, every year, they have a theme and the kids have to come up with a solution to a problem. This year, the team has come up with something for runners. The coach of the team has asked that I post the link for the survey they are taking from runners. It would help out these kids if all my running friends would answer and pass along the survey!

We are Team S.T.R.E.N.G.T.H a robotics team from Mechanics Grove School in Mundelein Illinois. We are competing in a competition called First Lego League. The theme of this years competition is replay, which is trying to help people exercise more in creative ways. We are trying to help people who do...

I know I haven't posted for a while! Believe it or not, I have been coaching, teaching Remotely at CLC, and harassing my teenagers! I loved the Thanksgiving pyramid workout I took my strength class through, so thought I would share it with you! All you need is a set of dumbbells.

U - 10 Up/Downs (kneel down and stand up. Don't use hands. 5 per side)

K - 10 Kettle Bell swings (if you don't have a kettle bell, use one dumbbell)
E - 10 Eyores (donkey kicks)
Y - 10 Y-lift (start with your hands and arms hanging down, and lift them up into a Y with your elbows straight)

Good morning!

As we navigate these murky waters of e-learning, I wanted to offer my services.

I am a nationally board certified health and wellness coach. I am an adjunct instructor at CLC as well as raising 3 teenagers myself.

One of the areas that students really struggle with is executive functioning. It is very difficult for students to learn how to prioritize their work, organize their space and set achievable goals. I saw students struggling with this from college age down to little ones in the spring.

Hiring an academic coach may be the key to success as students stay home to learn.

The weather is beautiful, and we are in Phase 3. Outdoor groups under 10 people may exercise together. 1:1 personal training is also permitted.

To this end, I am going to start a Couch to 5K group! We will meet once a week for this interval running class that brings you from not running at all to running 30 minutes straight. I am thinking Saturday mornings at 8am are a perfect day and time to get things started! We will meet at various locations throughout Mundelein.

This class will run 8 weeks starting June 20 at 8am, for $150.

So, sign up today! Send me a message to get the ball rolling!

I've been thinking about this and struggling with it all day. You see, I am ready to get back to business. Ready to start meeting with clients to train them, to coach them, to teach them to run. I am ready to start advertising. I even came up with a cute little phrase to get people's attention.

But, with all the uncertainty, protests, violence, fear and confusion that has gripped our country in the last week, it feels tone deaf and disingenuous.

So, I'm not going to give all the surface reasons to hire a coach or trainer. We all know those reasons anyway, and while they may be enough to motivate someone to get started, they will never be enough to sustain the effort long term. You have to dig deeper if you want to make lifelong changes.

* Exercise has been proven time and again to be effective as a mood stabilizer, emotional release, and a way to maintain and improve focus and energy. I know I am a better person and feel myself when I am exercising regularly.

* Exercise can give a person a sense of control in an out of control situation. You are controlling your body, your breath, your movement. The more you do it, the better you are able to maintain that control. You are the one that decides to lace up your gym shoes and get to work.

* Exercise can strengthen your immune system, improve your cardiovascular function, control weight, improve joints, muscles, and bones. Physically, this can, in turn, control disease. You can literally live longer with exercise.

These are deep and meaningful reasons to hire a personal trainer. I can come to your home with my own equipment. I am prepared to sanitize equipment between clients. We can also use bodyweight if that is more comfortable for you. The key is that I will work with you to provide a personalized workout that fits your needs.

In addition to personal training, I also offer wellness coaching. So many of us are feeling lost and out of sorts coming out of these last few months. There is more than just the physical dimension that creates your total picture of health. I can help you create the road map for you and be along while you develop and work towards the goals in your life that are important to you! I am a national board certified health and wellness coach, qualified to help you.

While this is a time of upheaval, this can also be a time of great opportunity!

As always, be safe and stay healthy!

I’m not going to lie, play it down or try to give excuses. Life has been a struggle. I am very lucky. I know this. I live in a comfortable home, have plenty of food, am not concerned about paying bills, have been able to stay in touch with friends, and have a wonderful partner who supports and encourages me. My family is healthy and safe. But it has still been a struggle. Motivation, discipline have fallen away as I try to adjust to this new normal. I try to put into words what I’m feeling. Part of it is the psychic and physical trauma the world seems to be going through. Some of it is worry for my family. The what-ifs come and haunt me at bedtime. The sadness as rights of passages and traditions are shelved in favor of safety. Because suddenly a middle school graduation is dangerous and possibly life threatening. Some of the strain is feeling the fear people have as they go to the grocery store. As the cashier struggles to breathe in her mask. I saw a friend the other day on a bike ride and yearned to give her a hug. I see my college aged kid miss her college friends. It is hard. And I struggle with being able to see the future. I like to plan. I need to have that stability in my life and I simply don’t know what the next month will bring.

So I breathe. I meditate and I try to focus on the moment. I let the worry and anxiety wash over me and continue on it’s way. I let myself feel it and I give myself grace and patience. I know these feelings will pass. I will come back to myself. I will stand strong for my friends, my family, my self. The sun will rise and I will enjoy the moment. I will live a lifetime in that moment. Because it is the little things that are important. That’s where we live. And I take heart in that. Once I get to that place, I am able to see clearly. I’m able to see the positives and gather my motivation and put the scraps of my discipline back together.

Today, I was able to overcome entropy. I ran 3 miles. And that is enough. I am enough. We all are. Peace my friends.
