Many people quietly wonder:
"Why do I feel so overwhelmed?"
"Why can't I switch my mind off?"
"Why do I overthink everything?"
What if there is another explanation? Our brains evolved to protect us from short-term threats. Thousands of years ago, those threats were often immediate and obvious, like a threat from a predatory animal. Today, however, many of us are exposed to a constant stream of stressors: work pressures, financial concerns, relationship uncertainty, social media comparison, endless notifications, and a never-ending flow of information.
The brain's alarm system doesn't always distinguish between a physical threat and an emotional one. When it senses uncertainty, rejection, conflict, criticism, or disconnection or anything that causes you a lot of emotional pain, it may respond as though something important needs your attention. Over time, this can leave us feeling mentally exhausted, emotionally numb or overwhelmed, or stuck in cycles of overthinking.
There is nothing wrong with you. ❤️
I believe many of the struggles people experience are not signs of weakness or failure. Often, they are signs of a brain that has been working very hard to keep them safe. The goal isn't to judge ourselves for these reactions; it's to understand them. Once we understand what's happening, we can begin responding with awareness instead of fear, compassion instead of self-criticism, and choice instead of automatic reaction.
That's where healing begins.
