Excellence doesn’t happen by accident.
This week, our crews spent time practicing the loading and unloading of an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP). We hope every patient receives the care they need before they ever need us. But when that call comes, preparation matters. Training like this helps ensure we’re ready to safely transport some of the region’s most critically ill cardiac patients.
Because when the real mission begins, it shouldn’t be the first time we’ve done it.

Every great program has people who have been there from the beginning.

Meet Austin Quillet.

Austin was one of the founding members who helped launch the SkyLife program in 2020. Since then, he’s served as a flight medic, led our education program, and now manages both our flight and ground operations. Before making Middle Tennessee home, Austin served in fire rescue and EMS in Ohio. Whether he’s teaching, mentoring, or supporting our crews, Austin leads with the belief that servant leadership and strong teams provide the best patient care. He is grateful to God for his career where he is able to serve others on a daily basis.
When he’s off duty, you’ll usually find him hiking, fishing, spending time at his parents in the U.P. or on an outdoor adventure with his girlfriend and their dogs, Dixie and Cowboy.

“What are the symptoms of heat stroke?”

Let’s break it down.
Heat stroke doesn’t always look dramatic.
Sometimes it looks like the person on your crew who’s suddenly quieter than usual.

The coach who seems confused on the sidelines.

The grandparent who stops making sense during a conversation.

The friend at the lake who says, “I just don’t feel right.”

Watch for:
• Confusion or unusual behavior
• Dizziness or fainting
• Hot skin
• Severe headache
• Nausea or vomiting
• Trouble waking someone up

These aren’t signs to “push through it.” Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately, move the person to a cooler place, and begin cooling them while help is on the way.

When every second matters, good design becomes part of patient care.
At TriStar Skyline Medical Center, every detail is designed with one goal in mind: getting critically ill and injured patients to the care they need as quickly as possible. As Tennessee’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center, a state-designated Level I Trauma Center, and home to a Comprehensive Burn Center, Skyline cares for some of the most complex patients in our region.
From a flight and ground EMS perspective, one of the first things you notice is how thoughtfully the hospital was designed. The helipads are located just outside the emergency department, and trauma rooms are only steps away. Less time moving through the hospital means more time focused on patient care. Great outcomes don’t happen because of one person or one department. They happen because physicians, nurses, EMS professionals, respiratory therapists, imaging teams, environmental services, security, registration, and countless others come together with one shared purpose.
We’re grateful to work alongside the incredible team at TriStar Skyline Medical Center every day.
