My husband, Beau, was a patient at Alive Hospice in the fall / winter of 2010. We spent our last holidays together there. Beau passed away 1/2/11. Our family was at Alive Hospice during the holidays, so we know just how special this time is. And for many families this will be the last holiday they will spend with their loved one.
2nd Helpings was created as a one-time event, or so we thought to “
pay forward” an act of kindness. With the support of so many we are able to provide a home cooked holiday meals for the patients, their families and friends, as well as the wonderful staff at Alive Hospice who spend their holiday taking care of the patients at Alive Hospice. We provide a “taste of home” in the hope that all involved to have a memorable holiday. This Thanksgiving we hosted our 6th major holiday. Through donations we were able purchase aprons for the volunteers to wear with our logo on them (which look stunning) The volunteers and staff did a wonderful job and through their efforts we were able to provide a “ Happy Thanksgiving “ to 125 – 150 people. This is truly a labor of love…those who have been through the “Hospice Experience” coming back to serve those going through the “Experience” and is so doing, they are actually healing themselves. Thus, the name 2nd Helpings. Our logo represents this so well with the two halves of the heart coming together in healing. During this past year, 2nd Helpings has grown. We are now a dedicated fund at Alive Hospice. Any gift made to Alive Hospice and designated to this fund is tax-deductible. Through the continued help of so many volunteers and supporters, both near and far, each doing what they want / can we have created a beautiful holiday tradition that I’m sure will continues to grow ….
