As the Gulf Coast prepares for severe weather, families caring for an older loved one may need a plan that goes beyond the usual hurricane checklist.
If your loved one depends on daily medications, mobility assistance, medical equipment, memory support or help with personal care, consider what would happen if the power goes out, roads become difficult to travel, or you need to leave home unexpectedly.
Now is a good time to:
• Refill essential medications and gather important health information
• Charge medical and communication devices and plan for backup power
• Identify where your loved one could safely stay if evacuation becomes necessary
• Make sure family members and caregivers know the plan
• Consider how a change in surroundings may affect someone living with dementia
For families caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, the Alzheimer’s Association offers additional emergency preparedness guidance:

A little planning before conditions change can make a big difference.
Please stay safe, coastal Alabama and Northwest Florida. 💜
Take safety precautions for individuals with Alzheimer's and plan for emergency situations like tornadoes, hurricanes, heat waves, fires and blizzards.
