About Dr. Sult

Dr. Sult started in the medical field as a paramedic in an advanced life support mobile intensive care unit. After a year in acupuncture school he decided to go to medical school. Georges University School of Medicine in Grenada the West Indies. There he lived with a Grenadian family interested in preserving their indigenous culture. He was introduced to local healers and “Bush Doc

tors”. He found the indigenous healing practices interesting and in harmony with his acupuncture training. He also wondered about the modern biochemical implications of these therapies. Dr. Sult transferred to the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Norman Cousins. While not a doctor, Mr. Cousins was the head of the department of psycho neuro-immunology. This is a fancy scientific way of saying holistic medicine. It was fascinating to find a group of scientists looking seriously at the interrelationship of mind, body and environment. And it was reaffirming to the other lessons learned both in acupuncture school and by the indigenous healers of Grenada. Mr. Cousins remained an important mentor to Dr. Sult until his death in 1990. Dr. Sult is on faculty with the Institute of Functional Medicine and teaches doctors from around the world the principles of functional medicine. At 3rd Opinion Dr. Sult applies the principles of functional medicine to his patient’s medical conditions. More can be learned about functional medicine at http://www.functionalmedicine.org

About the Movement

Let me ask you a question: When was the last time you felt truly well? I don't mean the last time you felt like there was nothing wrong. I mean the last time you felt deep, full wellness in your body, mind, and spirit. It's a hard question to answer, isn't it? And yet it's crucial, and it's where I start each one of my appointments with a new patient, as many of you know. Functional medicine - the discipline I practice along with a growing number of physicians in this country—acknowledges that wellness is so much more than the absence of disease. In a nutshell, functional medicine is a system that addresses the underlying causes of disease, that takes into account the interactions of the complex systems of the body, and that builds a therapeutic partnership between patient and physician. My colleagues and I believe that finding wellness isn't about getting a prescription for whatever symptom is bothering you at the moment. Instead, finding health is about addressing the fundamental causes of health issues, and about understanding that each of us is a marvelously interconnected system. To us, wellness is a vibrant state of wellbeing. I'm proud to be part of the functional medicine movement, and that you—especially if you're one of the millions of Americans suffering from chronic disease, whether it's cancer or diabetes or mental illness—will join me on the journey ahead, as we build a community around this movement to share in what we've learned together. About the Book

When was the last time you were completely well? I don’t mean the last time you “felt okay” for a day or two; I mean completely well. If you are like most patients who come to my office, this is not an easy question to answer. In part, it’s because “completely well” is a nebulous term. It’s different for everyone and yours to define. What I am really asking is this: when did your health change? What was the year, the month, the moment that your health shifted from completely well—whatever that means for you—to what it is now? The answer is crucial, because knowing when your health changed means we can explore the most important question of all: why? If you are like most patients I see, you have been suffering from chronic illness for longer than you care to recall. You’re a regular with your local doctor, have been referred to one or several specialists, and have traveled to universities and/or the Mayo Clinic in an effort to determine what is wrong with your health. You’ve been given a variety of diagnoses, with a drug to combat each symptom and further drugs to counteract the side effects of the first batch. You are anxious because you are ill and ill because you are anxious. Despite all your efforts, all the doctors’ visits, research, and medication—a devastatingly frustrating cycle—the problems have persisted. At some point, not only did the doctors start to doubt you . . . you started to doubt yourself. Whether you have found this book through research, a recommendation, or through a doctor, you are probably feeling defeated. But you are in the right place. Functional medicine can restore hope. Functional medicine has the capacity to unleash your awesome capacity to heal. Sometimes the best advice comes from an unexpected place. Yes, even Frozen 2. ❄️

“𝗗𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴.”

I said this during our recent Precision Lyme Management Community Zoom because it captures something incredibly important about navigating chronic Lyme.

When you’ve been sick for a long time, it’s easy to feel like you need to do ALL the things.

You hear about mast cell activation. Mold. A new supplement. A new treatment. A new device. A protocol that worked for someone else.

And suddenly, everything feels urgent.

But the question isn’t simply, “Could this help?”

The better question is: “Is this the next right thing for me?”

That’s where the Precision Lyme Management map comes in.

It helps you understand where you are, what may deserve your attention now, and whether your body has the resilience and capacity for that next step.

You don’t have to do everything at once.

You just need to do the next right thing.

Some seasons of becoming are quiet ones. 🌹

The seasons where it may not look like much is happening on the outside, but underneath, we are healing, learning, releasing, and growing roots.

This is one of the many reflections I share in 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑅𝑜𝑠𝑒: 𝐴 𝐵𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑖𝑛 𝐵𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔, my first collection of poetry. These poems were written through my own seasons of joy, grief, love, loss, questioning, healing, and growth—and my hope is that somewhere within these pages, you find words that speak to your own journey, too.

For the woman who is still becoming. 🤍

“𝐴𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑠𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑑𝑜𝑤𝑛…”

How many times have you told yourself that?

After summer.
After the kids go back to school.
After this busy stretch at work.
After the holidays.

The truth is, there may never be a perfect time to start prioritizing your health.

As we head into a new season, maybe the goal isn’t to wait until life gets quieter. Maybe it’s to decide that feeling better deserves a place in your life as it is right now.

If you’ve been thinking about getting support, asking new questions, or taking a different approach to your health, September might be a good time to begin.

If you have chronic Lyme, one of the most important things I want you to understand is this:

It’s rarely just about the infection.

There are multiple things that can keep you stuck and if we don’t understand what they are and how they work together, it’s very difficult to know what to focus on next.

I break down some of those pieces in this video.

If this way of looking at chronic Lyme is new to you, start with my free Chronic Lyme Guide: https://bit.ly/ChronicLymeGuideJBWDrSult

And if you’re ready to go deeper, the Precision Lyme Management Community is where I teach this framework in much greater depth and help you understand how all of these pieces fit together in the healing process.

A little color, a lot of nourishment, and SO delicious. 🥗

We recently enjoyed this beautiful salad from Mother's Cupboard, and it was too good not to share! They offer a different special each week, always filled with fresh, nourishing ingredients.

We love sharing some of what we’re eating—whether it’s something we’ve made at home or picked up locally—because we hope it gives you a little inspiration for your own plate.

Eating well doesn’t have to be complicated. Choose nourishing options as often as you can, enjoy what you’re eating, and don’t forget to add some color! 🌿🥕🥬🍅

We’re not going to stop hiking because of ticks. 🌿 But we are going to take a few precautions.

One of the things we use when we’re out hiking is Perratin, a black pepper-derived tick repellent. It’s an easy step to take before heading into the woods, tall grass, or anywhere ticks may be hanging out.

And when you get home? Do a thorough tick check. You don’t want any little hitchhikers coming inside with you.

A few simple precautions can go a long way while still allowing you to get outside and enjoy it.

Already dealing with chronic Lyme? I created a free Chronic Lyme Guide to share a broader perspective on why people can continue to feel stuck and what may be missing from the healing conversation.

Chronic illness has a way of making your world smaller and often, it happens so gradually you barely notice it.

You stop making plans too far in advance. You say no to things you once enjoyed. You start weighing every invitation against the energy it might cost you tomorrow.

And this isn’t only true for people living with chronic Lyme. We see it across so many chronic and complex illnesses.

After more than 30 years of caring for patients, I’ve come to believe there’s an important question we should be asking when we talk about healing:

Is your life getting bigger?

Because ultimately, healing isn’t just about improving symptoms or changing numbers on a lab report. It’s about getting more of your life back.

I wrote more about what that can look like and why I believe it matters so much in my latest blog.

Good morning! Aren’t these roses beautiful? 🌹

They were blooming outside our office recently, and I walked by them a couple of times before I finally thought, I need to actually stop and look at these.

You know the saying, “stop and smell the roses”? It felt like a pretty perfect reminder for a Monday morning especially as summer starts to wind down.

We spend so much time rushing to the next thing that sometimes we forget to notice what’s right in front of us.

So, this is your little reminder for the week: slow down, stay in the here and now, and stop to smell the roses. ❤
