What comes to mind when you think of hyaluronan (HA)?
Lubrication? Hydration? Tissue gliding?

These are important parts of the story, but the emerging research is revealing a much more complex picture.

HA is a major component of the fascial extracellular matrix. Within fascia, it contributes to the environment that enables adjacent tissue layers to slide and glide. Research also increasingly recognises HA as a biologically active molecule whose functions are influences by its molecular weight, turnover and interactions with cells and receptors.

This makes HA particularly interesting when we consider the transition from healthy tissue homeostasis to inflammation, fibrosis and impaired regeneration.

In our next FRS webinar, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝗴 will explain these multiple faces of hyaluronan and will talk about her research into the role of HA in fascial health and disease.

𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝟭 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺?

A recent open-access review by Slater et al. (2024) discusses how fascia is interconnected with the nervous, vascular, lymphatic, immune and endocrine systems. Rather than being viewed simply as passive connective tissue, fascia is described as a dynamic environment that can sense and respond to changes throughout the body.
One particular interesting part of this story is hyaluronan.
Hyaluronan is a major component of the extracellular matrix and contributes to the lubrication that allows fascial tissues to slide and glide. The review also discusses emerging research suggesting that altered hyaluronan organisation may change tissue behaviour, potentially contributing to stiffness, swelling, pain and reduced tissue mobility.
This is an emerging area of research. The aim is not to reduce complex conditions to a single mechanism, but to understand how the different components of the fascial system may interact.

And this is where the conversation gets really interesting...

We had a lively discussion about navigating the research literature, evaluating evidence, grey literature, and overcoming the challenges of finding full-text publications when you’re not affiliated to a University.
One message came through loud and clear: there is real enthusiasm for more resources that help clinicians, educators, researchers, and others interested in fascia science find and access high-quality, open-access research.
