Phthalates negatively impact human health primarily by acting as endocrine disruptors. These ubiquitous chemicals mimic, block or interfere with natural hormones. This disruption affects core bodily processes including reproduction, child development and metabolic health.

To elaborate, phthalates decrease testosterone levels, lower s***m concentration and reduce s***m motility. They are also linked to higher miscarriage rates, early menopause, and conditions like endometriosis. Prenatal exposure can cause structural abnormalities in the male reproductive tract. Also, they’re associated with precocious (early) puberty development in young girls.

In utero exposure impairs fetal neurodevelopment. They are also correlated with higher risks of ADHD and autism spectrum symptoms in children, lower childhood IQ and delayed language development.

Phthalates disrupt insulin sensitivity and raises long-term diabetes risks. They also interfere with the hormones that regulate fat tissue and metabolism. Chronic exposure to high-molecular-weight phthalates correlates with elevated blood pressure and higher cardiovascular mortality.

Furthermore, they’re linked to a higher incidence of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers. High exposure in utero or during youth is linked to rare bone cancers like osteosarcoma.

Blueberries are back on the list!!

These are the 12 most pesticide-contaminated conventional produce items. Buy organic whenever possible:

Spinach - more pesticide residue by weight than any other produce
Kale, collard, and mustard greens - over half of samples tainted with potentially cancer-causing pesticides
Strawberries - Americans eat about 8 pounds per year, often loaded with dozens of pesticide types
Grapes
Nectarines
Peaches
Cherries
Apples - frequently treated post-harvest with additional chemicals
Blackberries - a newcomer based on 2023 USDA tests; 91% of samples had detectable residues
Pears
Potatoes - the most consumed vegetable in America; 90% of samples contained chlorpropham, a sprout inhibitor
Blueberries - back on the list, with traces of highly toxic pesticides detected

Blueberries have thin skin, high surface area, and get sprayed often during the growing cycle. A baking soda soak knocks down some surface residue. Anything that's already penetrated the cuticle stays put.
