Through the ages, wellness trends have shifted. After all, if you’re working the land, you don’t also need to squeeze in a 5-mile run. In the early 1900s, women were advised to lift imaginary pianos, and Dr. Emil Bunzi suggested “six to eight yawns, each followed by the operation of swallowing” to strengthen the lungs.

Shakira had it right. Your hips don’t lie. Whether you are literally perched on a brownstone stoop watching the world go by or metaphorically stoop-sitting at a desk for eight hours, your hip flexors have likely staged a protest. They are tight, cranky, and make you walk in a decidedly un-Shakira-like way.

I see it every day. We were meant to be fluid, graceful creatures; instead, we’re human folding chairs. It is time to stop apologizing to your lower back and start reclaiming your range of motion.
