What is shading on clarinet? 😎

Shading is when you partially cover or uncover a key/tonehole to slightly adjust a note’s pitch, response, or tone color.

It can be especially useful for correcting the intonation of certain notes in specific musical contexts, and it can save you from getting unnecessary pitch adjustments done on your instrument too.

Never underestimate the importance of a thorough playtest! đŸŽ¶

Playtesting after repair work helps us check response, feel, and overall function in a real musical context. Everything can look and feel right mechanically, but playing the instrument gives us that extra layer of confirmation and helps dial in the specs for each player.

And after a few requests for more playtests, this felt like the perfect way to show a bit more of that final step in the process 😅

Tired of your right hand fighting you on clarinet?

A recent consulting session brought up one common clarinet ergonomics issue worth talking about: the thumb rest.

Most stock thumb rests sit too low, and even adjustable ones often don’t go high enough to support a natural hand position.

That can lead to extra tension, awkward hand placement, and unnecessary strain while playing.

One simple fix is repositioning or replacing the thumb rest to bring the hand into a more balanced, comfortable setup.

It’s a small adjustment, but makes for a big impact.
