Free Workshop Alert 🥳 For my dietitians, clinicians, and coaching entrepreneurs, I'm hosting a free workshop on July 26th: How to Build Confidence as a Clinician and Entrepreneur, and Challenge Imposter Syndrome. Register here: https://alisarumsey.com/workshop

You’ll learn how to build more confidence as both a clinician and a business owner, along with steps you can take to challenge imposter feelings and stop them from taking over and running the show.

Increase your confidence so that you can show up more fully for your clients (and yourself!), support lasting behavior change, and grow a sustainable business.

Plus, we’ll unpack “imposter syndrome” and talk about the various factors that affect your confidence.

What the workshop will cover:
👉What clinicians often mean when they say they want to have more confidence
👉How perfectionism affects confidence
👉Reframing what confidence really means
👉Who benefits from your lack of confidence (hint: it’s definitely not you!) and who gets off the hook
👉How to build your confidence as a clinician
👉Why taking signing up for another training isn’t necessarily the answer
👉Should you “fake it until you make it”

You'll also learn...
👉How to build your confidence as an entrepreneur
👉How you can sit in the “messy middle” and deal with the unknown
👉How imposter syndrome shows up and gets in your way when it comes to building a business and your career
👉Why imposter syndrome is not a "you" problem
👉How our cultural/societal conditioning affects our confidence and imposter feelings
👉What you can do to challenge imposter feelings and not let them take over or affect your career and business

It’s on Wednesday, July 26th from 5-6pm ET (a replay will be sent to everyone who registers, available for 30 days) and 1 CEU for dietitians is pending approval 🎉

Enrollment is open for The Liberated Clinician: an intimate 6-month weight-inclusive group coaching experience for dietitians & clinicians that incorporates business coaching, mentoring, supervision/case consultations & community support. Learn more: https://alissarumsey.com/tlc

Grow your business, grow your counseling skills, grow your confidence - as a clinician and an entrepreneur.

I know first-hand how challenging entrepreneurship can be. Since I started my business 8+ years ago I've felt overwhelmed, lonely, confused & questioned if this was the right path. I've felt "imposter syndrome", had confidence issues, a never-ending to-do list & regularly thought: "Should I just go back to what I was doing before?" It was (& still is!) a lot.

Over the years I've invested in many business trainings, counseling courses, accountability groups & mastermind groups. I learned so much - and was left wishing that I could integrate pieces of all of them into 1 program that was built specifically for dietitians & clinicians.

I specifically wanted a space where:
👉You can learn & talk about business building, thru a weight-inclusive, justice-informed lens.
👉You can get support for the loneliness, the confusion, the imposter syndrome, the confidence issues, the burnout.
👉You can be held in compassion, able to show up as your full self, while being held accountable & pushed to consider other perspectives, to grow in a way that aligns w/your values & makes you a better clinician.

And thats what The Liberated Clinician is all about!

The group is capped at 12 ppl so everyone has a personalized experience and hands on support.

If you want to build/grow your weight-inclusive business from a justice-informed lens, while prioritizing taking care of yourself, I invite you to check out the program: https://alissarumsey.com/tlc

You can also join our free virtual Open House next Tuesday 4/25 to learn more about the program, meet the facilitators, hear from a few of our alumi, and get your questions answered: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEpcequpzouHdP6mGN0d_21bYisKEWkkx2J #/registration

It wasn’t until I had been a dietitian for almost a decade that I actually received comprehensive, inclusive eating disorder training. And this is a HUGE problem.

Because – as the post I shared earlier this week speaks to – eating disorders & disordered eating are SO common.

As a reminder:
-1 in 5 females and 1 in 7 males: prevalence of EDs in the US by age 40 (rates in trans & gender NC people are 4-8x higher)
-75% of women have disordered eating or an eating disorder
-Eating disorders show up in people of all races, ethnicities, genders, ages, and body sizes
-The vast majority of EDs are in people who are “normal” weight or who are fat. Less than 6% of people with an eating disorder are “underweight”.

As Jessica Setnick says: “If you’re [a dietitian] working with clients, you’re working with eating disorders”.

It is imperative that dietitians receive eating disorder training AND imperative that the training is inclusive of all body sizes, races, ethnicities & genders. Unfortunately, so much of the “traditional” eating disorder training and treatment reinforces fatphobia or fat stigma (not to mention transphobia, racism, and more).

Here are a few places you can start:
conference (May, virtual & in-person)eatingdisorders conference (July, virtual)
Eating Disorder Foundations Training
Nutrition Counseling for Eating Disorders Training
*If you have found other trainings helpful, please share in the comments below!

If you’re a dietitian, no matter what area you practice in you need to be screening for eating disorders and – if you don’t have the training – refer out to an ED provider. Unfortunately, all the current eating disorder screening tools have weight bias built in, (tho just created an awesome HAES-friendly one!) but even adding a few questions to your assessment can help:
-Do you feel guilty after eating certain foods?
-Do you ever feel out of control around food, like you can't stop eating?
-When you think you’ve eaten too much, do you do anything to make up for it?

Questions/thoughts? What'd I miss? Share below!

It took me a long time to realize I was an “eating disorder dietitian”. And not because I wasn’t working with people who had eating disorders…

But because in all of my nutrition training, I was taught that:
1) Eating disorders were rare
2) That someone will LOOK like they have an eating disorder (aka super skinny, emaciated)

This is all so incredibly problematic because eating disorders (EDs) are actually VERY common 😔

Some stats:
👉The estimated lifetime prevalence of EDs in the US by age 40 is 1 in 5 females & 1 in 7 males. (some suggest that EDs affect up to half the US population & “disordered eating” affects the vast majority)
👉EDs don’t have a “look” – they affect people across genders, races, ages, ethnicities & body sizes
👉Less than 6% of people with EDs are “underweight"
👉POC are half as likely to be dx with an ED or receive treatment as whyte people
👉Transgender & gender non-conforming ppl are 4-8x more likely to have an ED than cisgender ppl
👉25-40% of people with EDs are men or boys
👉Most EDs begin in adolescence or early adulthood, but they often persist into older adulthood in part because so few people (only 10%) receive treatment

While not all diets progress to eating disorders, the vast majority of EDs begin with a diet.
👉By 9 yo, 50% of girls have dieted or restricted their food intake
👉2003 study: 62% teen girls & 29% teen boys were actively dieting/trying to lose weight
👉2016 study of 14/15 year olds: dieting was the most important predictor of developing an ED. Teens who dieted “moderately” were 5x more likely to develop an ED and those who “extreme restriction” were 18x more likely to develop an ED than those who didn't diet
👉EDs are one of the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid use disorder

Only 10% of people with eating disorders ever get treatment😣

Excited to share: we’ve got a Support Group starting this month 🥳 To support you in integrating non-diet work/intuitive eating into your life while combating the diet culture messages that the start of the year inevitably brings.

It can be really hard work to do this non-diet work on your own. Especially now, amidst the TONS of ads and conversations on how you need to “change” your habits or “fix” your health to start the new year off “right” 😳

The diet industry is in full force this time of year - and we know that not only does food restriction and dieting not work long-term...but it also causes us a lot of harm 🤦‍♀️

Is anybody else tired of these messages yet?😅

I know these messages aren’t easy to hear and they aren’t going away anytime soon (although I wish they would!), which is why Jasmine and I are offering a new support group this month to discuss intuitive eating and work to combat the diet culture messages that the start of the year inevitably brings.

The Unapologetic Eating Non-Diet Processing & Support Club is now enrolling! The group begins February 6th & runs for 5 weeks. Link in bio to learn more & register 🤗

The group includes 5 weeks of group meetings for you to get support, feel less alone, and continue to integrate non-diet and intuitive eating principles into your life.

We are limiting it to 10 people, to create a supportive space to discuss intuitive eating & work to combat the diet culture messages that January brings.

What’s included:
✔️5 live group calls - a combo of learning, processing, coaching, & support💻
✔️A copy of Unapologetic Eating sent to you + a personalized, signed bookplate from me 📚
✔️The encouragement of a community of like-minded people on the same path 🙋‍♀️🙋
✔️Practical tips & tools to implement intuitive eating in your own life🥯🥬🧀🍓

If you are looking to connect with others, build resilience against diet messages, understand more deeply the principles of intuitive eating and how to integrate them into your life, and gain encouragement from like-minded people - we’d love to have you join us🥰
