Job Opportunity: Clinical Advisor for Primary Care Strengthening – Guyana

📢 Mount Sinai is hiring a Clinical Advisor for Primary Care Strengthening to coordinate in-country implementation for Mount Sinai's primary care strengthening initiatives in Guyana. The role will support national efforts to improve access to high-quality, community-centered primary healthcare, with a focus on adult primary care, chronic disease management, and health system strengthening. The role involves working closely with government stakeholders, regional health facilities, and technical teams to support the development and implementation of clinical guidelines, quality improvement initiatives, data systems, and innovative care models across multiple regions.

📍The position is based in Georgetown, Guyana, and requires regular regional and international travel, as well as providing technical support and training to strengthen clinical capacity and service delivery.

Congratulations to the first graduates of the Guyana Digital Health Training Institute (DHTI), who celebrated completing their program at a certificate luncheon!

The graduates completed 17 training modules and a rigorous final evaluation that included a comprehensive knowledge exam and a live demonstration of real-world skills. They will join Guyana’s Ministry of Health for a year of paid service as digital health specialists to support the rollout of the country’s national electronic health record system.

At the luncheon, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony, Guyana's Minister of Health, gave remarks congratulating the graduates and emphasizing the need for a strong workforce to achieve the country’s innovative vision for digital health.

The DHTI is a The Mount Sinai Hospital initiative in partnership with Ministry of Health - Guyana and supported by The Greater Guyana Initiative. The training course was implemented in partnership with RioMed, and is the first in a series designed to build skills in Guyana across digital health fields, including health informatics, data science, and artificial intelligence. Mount Sinai is proud to partner with Guyana’s Ministry of Health to help build the country’s digital health workforce!

Mount Sinai’s Guyana Child and Youth Health team held trainings last week in partnership with the Ministry of Health - Guyana to strengthen health care for children with autism in Guyana.

The first training enhanced the skills of about 25 speech and language therapists and rehabilitation officers to apply advanced speech therapy techniques and interventions for children with autism.

The second training provided an introduction to assessing and diagnosing autism, bringing together around 20 Guyanese physicians and rehabilitation officers to strengthen the knowledge and skills needed to accurately and effectively assess and diagnose autism. These sessions are part of a series of trainings aimed at advancing autism care for children across Guyana.

We are pleased to announce the five awardees for the 2026 New York City Partnership Pilot Project Awards! These awards provide funding of up to $25,000 for pilot projects that address health challenges faced by communities in Queens, NYC. The NYC Partnership is a collaboration between the Arnhold Institute for Global Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Community and Global Health Institute at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst and Queens.

The selected projects are:

Just 15 years ago, 50-80% of Kenyan children with sickle cell disease died before age five. As care for them improves, more children are living to adolescence and adulthood, and there is an increasing need for specialized adolescent care for these young people. Last week, Dr. Alexandra Coria, with her collaborator Dr. Virginia Byron and expert facilitators, conducted a training in adolescent health for providers caring for youth with sickle cell disease. The training, held in Eldoret, Kenya, was practical and skills-based. The team worked with Youth Trainers —young people 18-24 living with sickle cell disease — to give real-time feedback to clinicians on their skills in talking to and counselling adolescents.

The event was supported by the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine and adapted from a previous training run by Arnhold Institute for Global Health Global Youth Health team. Dr. Coria and team trained more than two dozen clinicians who will now take their new skills back to clinics and hospital wards.

Thank you to the Youth Trainers for their hard work, expertise, and enthusiasm and for making the training a big success!

Youth with HIV are a unique and vulnerable population, and Arnhold Institute faculty helped elevate their voices this week at the International AIDS Conference and the Academic Medical Education International Workshop on Pediatrics & HIV.

Dr. Ashley Chory and Dr. Rachel Vreeman shared important research on the lived experiences of youth with HIV at these conferences.

Dr. Chory’s work described the undervalued work of youth peer navigators, including the heavy emotional burden and even physical risk that they sometimes face. Her work also focuses on adolescent boys with HIV, who experience unique stigma and social pressure that is under-addressed.

Dr. Vreeman’s poster described the health and needs of pregnant youth who were infected around the time of birth and have lived their entire lives with HIV.

Ken, a peer navigator at our partner institution Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kenya, and Scholastica, a youth peer navigator at the MTRH Rafiki Centre of Excellence in Adolescent Health, also joined our researchers at the conference!

Mount Sinai, with Ministry of Health - Guyana, hosted a 3-day workshop to enhance the skills of health care professionals supporting children with autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions. More than 30 occupational therapists and rehabilitation officers from across Guyana attended the workshop. The training focused on an introduction to occupational therapy and fundamentals of behavioral therapy for children with autism. This is part of a broader initiative to strengthen autism services in Guyana, with another training workshop planned for August.

We are proud to support Guyana’s Ministry of Health in improving care for children with autism.
