The Arnhold Institute’s Ghana Partnership recently presented research on building and evaluating a new care model called AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative to treat hypertension and diabetes within Ghana’s national primary care system. The research team, including Samuel Chatio, PhD, MSc, Senior Research Fellow at the Navrongo Health Research Centre; David Heller, MD, MPH, Ghana Partnership Director; and Evan Alvarez, MS, MA, Ghana Partnership Program Manager presented the poster at the 2026 Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

The poster presented an assessment of the quality of hypertension and diabetes care in 16 districts in central Ghana, based on interviews and surveys of more than 1,200 community members, 600 health providers, and 90 health facilities. The team found significant gaps in awareness, care accessibility, and treatment quality for both conditions, but also great demand from both communities and providers for more outreach, training, and materials to close this care gap. In collaboration with GIZ Ghana, the work will inform and guide the AYA initiative, aiming to improve awareness, treatment, and control of these and other chronic diseases across Ghana.
