What actually happens seconds before you faint?
It starts with a sudden drop in blood flow to the brain.
Sometimes, blood begins to pool in the lower part of the body, especially the legs, reducing the amount returning to the heart and brain.
As less oxygen-rich blood reaches the brain, brain cells begin receiving less oxygen and fewer nutrients than they need.
One of the first signs is changes in vision. Your field of view may begin to narrow, creating what many people describe as tunnel vision.
At the same time, your nervous system detects the problem and tries to stabilize blood pressure and blood flow.
Your heart and blood vessels respond, but if the brain continues receiving too little blood, normal brain activity starts to slow down.
Neural signals become less efficient, making it harder for the brain to process information normally.
Balance and muscle coordination may also weaken, causing feelings of dizziness, lightheadedness, or instability.
To protect itself, the brain activates an emergency response.
By temporarily shutting down consciousness, the body falls into a horizontal position, making it easier for blood to flow back to the brain.
Just seconds before fainting, blood flow and brain activity reach their lowest levels.
Then consciousness is briefly lost until normal circulation is restored.
That is what actually happens in the moments before a person faints.
