Greetings! Health Tip Of The Day: If you are a creative individual then get on the crafting band wagon. A public health research source found there is happiness in doing arts and crafts even occasionally. These people reported greater happiness and life satisfaction verses people who did not get involved in arts and craft. The study was done in the United Kingdom. About one-third had done wood-working, knitting, photography, or other projects at least once in the previous year. Greetings! Health Tip Of The Day: Let us continue to review listeria bacteria. A scary point is that listeria can flourish even in the cold temperatures of the deli cases or refrigerated storage. Another scary point is the fact if only one package of meat or cheese in a grocery store contains bacteria it can spread to those not infected. So how does this occur? This can happen through handling or if the bacteria ends up on the slicers or the countertops. They tend to use the same cloth to keep wiping the slicer throughout the day. For those individuals not even at high risk they should limit how frequent cold cuts are eaten. Because cold cuts contain a lot of sodium this may elevate blood pressure. Request the low sodium cold cuts. In addition cold cuts are processed meats which may increase our risk of cancers, elevated cholesterol, heart condition, etc. Part of your healthy lifestyle is to reduce or limit processed meats, eat at least 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily or juice them, eat your whole grains, reduce fat in your diet, cut down on red meat, eat at least 25-30 grams of fiber daily, drink 1/2 your body weight in water daily. Just to name a few tips. Enjoy the rest of your night. Stay informed and stay safe! Have a blessed and amazing weekend.

Greetings! Health Tip Of The Day: It is really getting a bit much for the media reports too many contamination of meats, vegetables and fruits with the bacteria listeria. Couple months ago a recall of millions of pounds of liverwurst and other deli meats from Boar's Head brand made dramatic headlines. Listeria has also caused foodborne illnesses in foods like cantaloupe, hot dogs, and even some cheeses. This is a hazardous bacteria. Health experts declare 90% of people infected with listeria end up having to be hospitalized. Individuals age 65 and older, are pregnant, or having a weakened immune system the CDC says are at a higher risk. This bacteria will more than likely spread beyond the gut and then to other parts of the body. Topic to be continued. Stay informed and stay safe!

Greetings! Health Tip Of The Day: Let us continue to look at other ways to reduce breast cancer and other cancers. (a.) Limit your drinking of alcohol. It should be none at all or occasional, like special occasions. If you do drink then, make it only one a day for women and two for men. Alcohol raises the risk for breast cancer. b. Get enough sleep nightly of at least 6-8hours. If you do not get enough during the week, make up for it over the weekend if you can. Sleep is vital to help recharge our immune system, give us energy and revitalize brain cells and help reduce brain fog and dementia. (c) Eat at least 25-30 grams of fiber daily. Reduce fat in your diet and cut down on red meat and processed meats such as hot dogs, salami, deli meats, beef jerky, etc. Fiber helps to absorb the fat. Eat lean meats. Reduce sugar intake. Cancer cells love fat and sugar. (d) Keep cells hydrated and drink 1/2 your bodyweight in water daily. It is easier for cancer cells to grow in a dehydrated body. Enjoy the rest of your night. Stay informed and stay safe.

Greetings! Health Tip Of The Day: Here are a few guidelines to help reduce the risk of not only breast cancer but other cancers as well: (1) Maintain a healthy weight. (2) Always schedule your healthy checkups on time. If unable to keep an appointment this does not mean not setting up another date. An health issue may be going on that you are not aware of that could worsen. (3) Exercise at least 30 minutes 5 days out of 7. Moderate exercise. Do not knock yourself out doing excess. (4) No smoking. Also remove yourself from second hand smoke which can increase the risk for breast cancer by 68%. Smoking can increase risk of cancers such as bladder, throat, esophagus, lung, for example. (5) If possible know your medical family history. (6) Incorporate Stress management and take at least 5 or 10 minutes out of your day to practice deep breathing exercises, Yoga, meditation etc. This helps to reduce the cortisol stress hormone that can increase the risk of headaches, frequency of colds, weaken immune system, thinning hair, etc. Enjoy the rest of your night. Greetings! Health Tip Of The Day: Now, tonight on channel 2 @ 11pm news a nursing professor discussed that she was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, (DCIS) that was discussed yesterday. There is no history of breast cancer in her family. There needs to be no history, for approximately 80-85% of those diagnosed have no family history. What is important is that she had an history of dense breasts. When your mammogram is done not all states may make you aware you have dense breasts. But NY will inform you when the letter is mailed out to you. All women with dense breasts should have a sonogram or MRI in addition to the mammogram. Cancer tissue and dense tissue both show up as white making it difficult to detect the cancer. Dense breasts usually have less fatty tissue. Dense breasts can increase breast cancer risk. If you have dense breasts discuss with your MD which additional screening he or she feels should be done for you. Enjoy the rest of your night. Stay informed and stay safe.

Greetings! Health Tip Of The Day: Yesterday I mentioned DCIS an early form of breast cancer. Identified as non-invasive. There are 5 stages of breast cancer. They are stage 0 to stage 4. Then on Wednesday's GMA channel 7 the actress Danielle Fishel who was in the show, Boy Meets World talked about her recent breast cancer diagnosis. Today she is age 43 and mom of 3 children. She was due her annual mammogram. She was thinking she was too busy for this but thanking God she decided to have it done. Please follow your intuition and set aside time for yourself. If Danielle waited and skipped her annual mammogram by next year it would have been higher than stage o. More than likely the cancer would spread beyond the milk ducts into the surrounding tissue. The cancer would then be identified as invasive. Let us never skip a year! Enjoy the rest of your night. Stay informed and stay safe.

Greetings! Health Tip Of The Day: Let us continue to discuss calcifications. Health experts tell us that calcifications can be an early sign of abnormal cells developing in the breast tissue. The size and shape may provide clues whether they are a marker of a benign, (no cancer) condition or if more testing is needed to rule out cancer. Well, yesterday we identified macrocalcifications are not a sign of cancer. Now, Micro-calcifications appear as small white spots. These may be randomly scattered, appear in groups or as specks in a line. This type of calcifications are more likely to signify cancer more than macrocalcifications. The radiologist and your MD may more than likely order more testing to check for precancerous cells or cancer. Calcifications that are cancerous are often related to a non-invasive form of cancer. It forms in the milk ducts and this cancer has not spread beyond the milk ducts. You may have heard of this early form of breast cancer. It is identified as Ductal Carcinoma in situ or DCIS. Enjoy the rest of your night. Stay informed and stay safe.

Greetings! Health Tip Of The Day: It is extremely important when going for your mammogram not to: 1. Use any deodorant, lotion, cream, or powder on your breasts or underarms. Applying these may interfere with a clear mammogram reading. These products could get mistaken for breast calcifications. There are 2 types: a. Macrocalcifications- May appear as large white spots. These are the more common type of calcification and usually do not need follow up imaging. Calcifications are not caused by taking calcium vitamins. There is no connection.
Breast calcifications are very common and more so in women over age 50. They do not cause any symptoms. They are also too small to be felt during a breast exam. Tomorrow we will look at the second type of calcification. Enjoy the rest of your night. Stay informed and stay safe.
