Don't led food-borne illness crash your party!

Safe steps in food handling, cooking, and storage are essential in preventing foodborne illness. You can't see, smell, or taste harmful bacteria that may cause illness. In every step of food preparation, follow the four guidelines to keep food safe:

Clean: Wash hands and surfaces often.
Separate: Don't cross-contaminate.
Cook: Cook to proper temperatures, checking with a food thermometer.
Chill: Refrigerate promptly.

Did you know that less than 12 inches of water can sweep a car off of the road?

Periods of heavy rain can bring safety threats such as floods, reduced visibility, and slick roads. During severe weather and heavy rain, it's best to avoid any unnecessary travel.

If you are driving, be sure to follow some basic safety rules:
✅Slow down
✅Have a safety kit in your car including a flashlight, batteries, and clean water
✅Bring a fully charged cell phone
✅Tell someone where you're going and when you plan to return
✅Never drive through flood water in a roadway

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are predicted for many parts of New York State, including Cayuga County. Remember, the best time to prepare for a possible weather-related emergency is now! Some ways you can do so:

- Charge all your electronic devices including cell phones!
- Have a supply of clean drinking water and food.
- Have flashlights and spare batteries.
- Make sure all household members know multiple safe evacuation plans.

Don't forget to include your pets in your plan, too!
