🩸 UPPER GI BLEED vs LOWER GI BLEED 🚨
Recognizing the source of bleeding can help guide urgent treatment and save lives.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is divided into:
• Upper GI tract → esophagus, stomach, duodenum
• Lower GI tract → small intestine, colon, re**um

🔍 UPPER GI BLEED Signs:
• Black tarry stools (Melena)
• Vomiting blood (Hematemesis)
• Coffee-ground vomit
• Epigastric pain
• Dizziness or weakness
• Pale skin from blood loss

Common Causes:
• Peptic ulcers
• Gastritis
• Esophageal varices
• Mallory-Weiss tears

🔻 LOWER GI BLEED Signs:
• Bright red blood in stool (Hematochezia)
• Maroon-colored stool
• Abdominal cramping
• Re**al bleeding
• Change in bowel habits
• Weakness or fatigue

Common Causes:
• Diverticulosis
• Hemorrhoids
• Colorectal cancer
• Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

⚠️ RED FLAGS:
Seek emergency care if there is:
• Massive bleeding
• Fainting or shock
• Rapid heart rate
• Severe weakness
• Shortness of breath
• Persistent vomiting blood

🩺 Diagnosis May Include:
• Endoscopy
• Colonoscopy
• CBC / hemoglobin levels
• CT angiography

💉 Management:
• IV fluids & stabilization
• Blood transfusion if needed
• Proton pump inhibitors
• Endoscopic intervention
• Surgery in severe cases

📚 Early recognition and rapid intervention are critical to preventing severe blood loss and complications.

🩺 RAAS System (Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System)

The RAAS system is the body's built-in mechanism for regulating blood pressure, fluid balance, and electrolyte levels.

🔹 Low blood pressure, low blood volume, or reduced kidney blood flow triggers the release of renin.
🔹 Renin converts angiotensinogen into angiotensin I.
🔹 ACE (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme) converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II.
🔹 Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to constrict, increasing blood pressure.
🔹 It also stimulates the release of aldosterone from the adrenal glands.
🔹 Aldosterone promotes sodium and water retention by the kidneys, further increasing blood volume and blood pressure.

📌 Key Function:
Maintain adequate blood pressure and ensure proper organ perfusion.
