What happens when a law school decides students need to learn to think before they learn to lean on AI?
The University of Chicago Law School is restricting phones and laptops in required first-year classes, with in-class exams completed without internet, electronic files, or apps.
The goal: protect the critical thinking, writing, and independent reasoning skills students need before layering AI tools on top. And importantly, they’re not rejecting AI altogether.
Students will still learn artificial intelligence just after the foundational skills are in place.
For educators and parents, that raises a bigger question: Which human skills do we need to protect and strengthen in an AI-driven world?

Is Naviance lying to our seniors?

Not exactly.

But the data families are looking at may no longer tell the whole story.

College admissions have changed. Test policies shift, demonstrated interest matters differently from school to school, Early Decision and Early Action strategies keep evolving, and changing institutional priorities can make past admissions results harder to compare.

That means a Naviance scattergram can still be useful but it isn’t always an apples-to-apples picture of what a student should expect today.

If you’re considering Early Decision, choose carefully.
Because Early Decision is binding, it should be reserved for a college where your student would truly be happy and where admission is realistic.
Applying early can also signal serious interest. Since colleges care about yield, a strong applicant who is on the cusp may benefit from the certainty that they will enroll if admitted. That’s one reason some colleges fill a large share of their freshman class through the Early Decision pool.

A smart Early Decision strategy asks:
Is this the right-fit college?
Is the student a realistic candidate?
Will they be comfortable giving up the chance to apply elsewhere through Early Action, ED II, or Regular Decision?

Applying early decision can be a smart move – but only when the ED boost potential gets the admit to a university that truly fits the student.
Before applying early decision to a school, families should look beyond the advantage of the ED bump and ask:

Is this truly the right academic and social fit?
Can we afford the cost without being certain of the financial aid package, or should our child ED a school that gives simultaneous notification of aid?
Can the student manage the curriculum, especially at an academically demanding college?
Would working a part-time job make it had to maintain satisfactory academic progress required for ongoing aid?

What matters is helping a student understand how they learn, build the strategies they need, and use those skills within the environment they’re in.

Platforms like Naviance are still useful, but results from prior grades may not be an apples-to-apples comparison. Previous applicants were likely evaluated under different policies, priorities, and holistic review criteria.

The landscape also varies by school:
Some colleges remain test optional, while others now require SAT or ACT scores
Demonstrated interest may matter more at certain schools
More colleges are adding Early Action, Early Decision, or ED II options
Enrollment shortfalls from last year are shifting some college priorities
