This year's Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on the Neurobiology of Brain Disorders included a strong ALS research presence. Target ALS-funded investigators shared major updates, from new A*O therapies and cryptic peptide antibodies to AI-driven subtyping of sporadic ALS. The momentum is building.

Target ALS Manager of Scientific Programs, Michael Dechellis-Marks, attended the conference and presented a poster on our Stem Cell Consortium, which aims to create a set of standardized, openly accessible stem cell lines and protocols to improve reproducibility across labs. Thomas's connection to ALS started at home, through conversations with his wife, who works with people facing the disease every day in her work as a physical therapist.

Those conversations, paired with documentaries and memoirs he sought out on his own, gave him a real understanding of what people living with the disease and caregivers carry.

That understanding led him to Target ALS, where research barriers come down through collaboration, and real progress toward treatments becomes possible.

Rosa Rademakers, PhD, explains how the Target ALS Data Engine allows researchers to dig into the same datasets and ask entirely different questions, informed by their own expertise.

In addition to sharing data, Dr. Rademakers and her collaborators are also working to generate cell lines from individuals who carry the C9 repeat expansion but have remained healthy and make them available to investigators studying other angles of the disease. Shared resources are critical to advancing progress in ALS research.

At the beginning of July, former NFL running back Chris Johnson shared that he's living with ALS. Instead of stepping back, he reignited the Ice Bucket Challenge, the movement that changed everything for this disease over a decade ago.

Target ALS founder Dan Doctoroff and his wife and Target ALS Board Member, Alisa Doctoroff, took the challenge alongside leaders from ALS United of Greater New York, The Lou and Eleanor Gehrig ALS Center of Excellence at Columbia University, New York Genome Center, and Empire State ALS Alliance, organizations we work alongside to move research forward.

Timing changes everything. Dr. Juliana Acosta-Uribe explains "phenoconversion", the critical window when a mutation carrier starts to show symptoms and treatment can have the biggest impact. Too early is unnecessary; too late may mean damage already done.

Meet Tom Grundy, a lifelong runner, half marathon finisher in 1:39, and this year, he's taking on the NYC Marathon for someone he loves.

Two years ago, his 33-year-old cousin, a rugby league player, was diagnosed with ALS. His condition has progressed quickly, but he and his family have faced it with a positivity that's hard to put into words. It was his cousin who asked him to run for Target ALS.

"This marathon is for him and my family, together with others facing down this disease."

With a background in brain cancer research, Tom knows exactly what funding can do: accelerate discovery, move trials forward, and change outcomes. His goal isn't just to finish. It's to help Target ALS fund the research that gets us closer to effective treatments, and one day, a world where Everyone with ALS Lives.
