Before we can even have a conversation about covid vaccination, we have to talk about where the information that's flooding social media is even coming from. And some of it comes from a horrifying place.

"I tried to stop blogging when COVID was at its height this year, because I felt like I needed to make space for the public health experts who had the most knowledge to be able to speak. I didn’t need to be clogging up the Internet with all this healthy living talk—we’re out here trying to survive, and I needed to let the scientists help us do that. Except, that’s the explicit opposite of what happened.

Apparently, there’s a mad dash to influence Black people’s thinking and decision making as it pertains to both COVID-19 and the vaccine that protects us from it. And it’s not Black people who are behind it.

[...]

A wealthy white man; a shadowy, unidentifiable organization whose concern for ā€œurbanā€ health—and we all know ā€œurbanā€ has always meant ā€œBlackā€ā€”didn’t actually exist before the covid shutdowns began; a man who is all too happy to lie to our faces about something as serious as HIV and AIDS—all want to exploit our legitimate questions about the health care system and medical science in America…. for what?

For profit."

There's a mad dash to influence Black people's thinking on COVID-19 and the vaccine. And it's not Black people behind it.

And, because now I’m in a mood…when I was doing some digging for a blog post, I uncovered the black market where people sell large batches of weight loss transformation photos for tiny dollar amounts, ostensibly to use people’s photos to sell products that don’t actually work. These batches, promising hundreds of photos, were stolen from social media hashtags and sold on service marketplaces like , ultimately allowing both the thief and the platform to profit off of scamming the public.

I actually found an account that was specifically selling ā€œBlack women transformation photos,ā€ but it disappeared after I inquired asking where the photos came from. Silly me, I should’ve taken the screenshot first.

My photos have been stolen for years. It was especially bad after the spate of articles chastising the obesity rate among Black women—knowing that the media climate being created by this fixation was creating a sense of desperation among us, using photos of a Black woman’s weight loss success would hopefully make them more money.

But if a product doesn’t have multiple people who can vouch for the product and its role in their journey, doesn’t have anyone who could speak to whether the process was sustainable and helped them maintain the weight loss LONG TERM, and—and this is important—are willing to speak on its behalf WITHOUT needing to be paid for speaking on it? Then you’re looking at a scam. That includes all these rebranded laxative teas, but also includes some of your favorite weight loss products, too.

Folks are strategizing on how to quickly and cheaply swindle you out of your cold hard cash. Don’t let them.

When you see promo for a product, ask WAY more questions before you click ā€˜add to cart.’ Ask for video testimonials. Ask for details. Ask for ingredient lists and what each thing does. If they can’t answer, you’ll know why. They probably don’t even know the person in the picture. šŸ™„

Yes, that’s me. No, that’s not my post. Hell naw, I have never had lipo. And there’s no way in hell anything that resembles lipo is $35 dollars, and no way that any procedure that costs $35 is safe. Let’s get that out of the way.

If you ever encounter this photo alongside a caption that sounds like this, let me know.

First of all, there is no such thing as *maintaining* a significant weight loss without exercise. Period. You can be sold whatever lie from whatever person you like, but there is no such thing as maintaining a triple digit weight loss without exercise.

Secondly, this predatory language that simultaneously seeks to make you feel bad while selling you a cure for the s**t that makes you feel bad is EXACTLY the kind of s**t I rail against every week in the Q&A—a climate that seeks to embarrass and humiliate people puts the kind of pressure on a person that prevents them from actually achieving and maintaining what I did.

The corny thing about this post is, the girl on the right? Her belly sits in her lap, too. I had to GAIN WEIGHT in order to build the kind of solid physique that didn’t have that hang time. And guess what? In this Covid climate? With all the Barbancourt and fried calamari that’s keeping me sane during a year long quarantine with these kids? GUESS WHAT?! DAT BELLY GON HANG TODAY.

That’s my last point. This predatory language, devoid of empathy and thirsty to steal $35 peasy ass dollars from you, in a time when people are sensitive about their bodies coming out of quarantine, is so nasty. If you love your sisters, that’s not how you speak to them. But if you’re a lying, stealing, predator, well……

We just will see you for what you are.

Block, report, and screenshot to me. I don’t want my name associated with bulls**t like this.

I sat down with Jess at Slate.com’s Thrilling Tales of Modern Capitalism to discuss one of my favorite topics: Weight Watchers!

Here’s a quote:

"There was a commercial that came out a few years ago, and it was like... 'if you're sad and you know it, eat a snack; if you're angry and you know it, eat a snack,' and I wanted to punch my television screen! Because you're making fun of this very serious thing... People don't always understand what it is that's happening when they feel like crying and, instead, they eat. They don't understand that, and [Weight Watchers was] mocking that in a commercial with a children's song. That's a serious matter, and not only do [they] think that's something to mock in a commercial, but [they] think that's a profit opportunity, and there's something kind of unethical and, really, just gross about that."

Take a listen here:

Yeah, it’s still selling diets.

Yeah, there’s a few pounds difference between the two pics, but there’s quite a few years, too.

I was a *baby* on the left. Young, sincere, naive to so much about my own self and what I needed. I was a habitual compulsive eater, and never even had the language to call it what it was. I slipped into a successful routine, with no real reason as to why it was successful, and so much of the rest of that story became history.

I look at the old me with pride. I’ve evolved so much, and I’m thankful for the boldness I held in my heart on the left—not knowing where I’d wind up, but willing to always work my way forward. On the right might show what kind of progress can come of that work, but on the left showcases the face of an uncomfortable but unafraid young woman who was willing to try and try and try some more.

To those of you in complicated fits and starts (or middles!) in your journey, change the way you look at the lovely face in the mirror. That person is ready to be uncomfortable but unafraid, too. ā¤ļø

It seems like today was just an especially hard day for so, so many of us. That memorial on the National Mall really broke me, and if you haven't son it, please take a look. I'll share a link in the comments.

Because it feels timely, I wanted to share with you something that has helped several of my clients, and me too, in understanding what grief is and how it works.

Sending each and every one of you so, so much love in this moment. We'll make it through this.

Grief strikes each person in a different way. When we lose someone we love, that loss can hit us hard, all at once. Or it
