Mental Health challenges as a construct has always been present in the Black and indigenous communities. However the western definitions, treatment and pathology of them is what is new. When we understand the language people are speaking and understand it as valid on its own, we can bridge understandings and improve trust and care.

No one taught us business. Here's a little lesson.

As social workers and therapists we have an ethical and moral responsibility to care for the people who seek us out.

And upselling people who are in a crisis state or trusting you to care for them is not only immoral, it's unethical. ESPECIALLY if you are working with insurance because you can find yourself in violation of an insurance contract.

Consider services across the life span of the client indtead. This is a more ethical way to ensure you are meeting the needs of those you serve at each stage they need you. Clients would rather receive support from 1 person who is appropriately trained to serve in the diverse ways they need at different points in time, than be sold something that holds little value to address their needs, but it lines your pockets..

As social workers and therapists we have a different threshold than other businesses. Very few coaches know this, but well meaning advice can cost you.

Providing appropriate advice for therapists is hard for most coaches. Developing strategy that will pass muster via your clinical board and that, most importantly, prioritizes the care and trust our clients put in us is a unique skill that comes from experience and understanding our field.

A better way to increase revenue for us is to think of the lifetime value of services we offer our clients. Clients should not have to seek care elsewhere because you dont offer something they need, yet you are qualified to do.

We have to be mindful of where the line stops for us in certain coaching spaces.

These are the kinds of conversations we have as therapists and social workers who have become consultants and coaches.
