I grew up believing that great work gets rewarded. This belief, known as ‘Tiara Syndrome’ 👑, posits that if we simply keep our heads down and do our jobs exceptionally well, we will get “crowned” with promotion or raise.

For those of us who have tried this approach, we know the reality can be very different. Great work, unfortunately, is most often rewarded with...more work.

To truly succeed, we must be our own advocates.

So, how do we do it?

✅ Build a powerful network: Surround yourself with people who can champion your career. Mentors, sponsors, and colleagues can provide guidance, support, and open doors for you. Attend industry events, join professional organizations, and leverage online platforms to connect with like-minded individuals.
✅ Negotiate like a pro: Negotiation isn't just about haggling over prices; it's a valuable skill for advocating for yourself in the workplace. Learn how to effectively communicate your value, articulate your goals, and ask for what you want. Whether it's a raise, a promotion, or a new project, negotiation can help you secure the bag.
✅ Be your own PR agent: Don't be afraid to toot your own horn. Document your accomplishments, share your successes on social media, and seek out opportunities to present your work. The more visible you are, the more likely you are to be recognized and rewarded.

The quiet part: 👂Each of these strategies can be learned. The harder part is navigating the mindset shift needed to deploy them effectively.

There is a club I now belong to that I never wanted to be a part of.

“Can you talk to my friend, she has just been diagnosed with breast cancer?”

After my breast cancer journey, my desire and ability to show up for others embarking on their own BC journeys has intensified. I imagine this is true for more than just me or breast cancer survivors. When we’ve been through something deeply challenging, there is a knowing about the journey that you simply can’t get otherwise. In particular - you know what you didn’t know. And that has compelled me to reach out to those at the beginning of their journeys

While everyone has a different journey there are some knowings that l have helped when folks reach out:
✔️ I know the desire for normalcy and the subconscious tendency to keep up a a pre diagnosis pace
✔️ I know the feeling of being over it but recovery not being over yet
✔️ I know unusual and intense pain that requires late night calls with doctors and ER visits - just to be sure
✔️ I know the importance of a medical team I trust and the difference caring support made
✔️ I know recovery isn't a solo sport. I needed wedge pillows, drain pouches and a bunch of other supplies I had never heard of

I know that for some people, it feels right to keep their diagnosis, treatment and recovery to themselves. For me, sharing mine has meant community, comfort, and connection—an opportunity to hold space for others facing the unimaginable. If you’re starting this journey or walking beside someone who is, know that you don’t have to do it alone.

The quiet frustration in the room was palpable. If you were an outsider looking in, you might have observed that each team member was polite and cordial. In fact, everyone was. Yet, that very lack of conflict and confrontation came at a cost - a cost to team effectiveness.

Work life balance, work life integration, it all sounds like buzz.

Is it achievable?

What does, (as Sky Jarrett coined it) the relaxed hustle look like in action? For me it means when friends come to visit, time at the beach is always on the itinerary.

It's not just about taking a break; it's about feeding my spirit. For me, balance means making room for joyful connection and true relaxation. 🌊

Let me be clear, it's easy to get caught up in the tasks of everyday life - the personal chores, the work responsibilities, and even the regular family obligations. And to be honest, I used to often allow these tasks to fill my days.

But I've learned that for me balance isn't just about being efficient with my time and getting everything done. (There will always be more to do.) So instead, I focus on boosting my energy. Whether it's a walk by the ocean or a deep conversation on the beach with a friend, these moments boost my spirit and deepen my overall well-being.

How do you feed your spirit and find balance in your life? Feel free to share your practices in the comments!

“What are you doing for your 50th?” I sense folks might be looking for a party. Nah, that's not it. Hosting (or even attending) a party was the last thing I wanted to do. For those who know me IRL or have been following me online, you know these past few years have been characterized by rewarding highs and challenging lows.

The last thing I wanted to do was to create more whirl. Instead, to celebrate, I am slowing down and allowing myself the spaciousness to sink into my blessings.

I feel deeply thankful for a soft-ish life rooted in two countries, a marriage to an amazing woman, a solid cadre of badass friends, work that I find deeply meaningful, and most of all health and strength. My motto: !

So instead of a party, to celebrate my 50th, I am exhaling into wellness. I am celebrating my life by giving myself some extended respite with my fave Kerry-Jo Ford Lyn, at my favorite place - the beach. Shout out to Shiela Johnson for running properties that allow for a deep exhale.

Tennis, pickleball and pilates are all on deck. But outside of that, I'm looking forward to healthy, tasty food, maybe some good reads and a few puzzles, a hammock overlooking the ocean and the time and space to reflect on the journey. That to me - is beyond exciting - it's enriching.

I hope that when you celebrate yourself (milestone birthday or not) you do so in a way that feels right for you!

I am convinced that I get a dopamine hit every time a puzzle piece fits. When I'm heads down examining puzzle pieces, my happiness is on ten. I become recharged and energized to tackle whatever comes next.

So why am I sharing this? As simple as it sounds, stepping away from work is a leadership strategy. It provides two key benefits:

🧘🏾 Mental Clarity: Stepping away allows our minds to reset. Whether it’s through a puzzle, a walk in nature, or another activity we enjoy, these breaks help us to clear our thinking, making room for fresh ideas and better decisions when we return to our tasks.

💆🏾‍♀️ Stress Reduction: Engaging in an activity that brings us joy reduces our stress and helps us maintain emotional balance. For me, solving puzzles is a way to quiet the noise and focus on something simple and rewarding.

So, while it might seem counterintuitive, taking time away from work can actually make us more productive. When we’re refreshed and happy, we are more energized and efficient. Not convinced? Try it. I encourage you to find an activity that brings you joy and make it a regular part of your routine. Then see the difference it makes to the rest of your day.

I sometimes ask myself, "How are you getting in your own way?”

For one, I know my ego will have me wanting to be perfect in the midst of still learning.

So, time and time again, I choose to remind myself that it’s okay to be a learner - to not be excellent at everything. It’s okay that I will continue to develop new tools and some will take more practice than others.

Thankfully, life keeps reminding me that I don't have to be perfect to be great. I just have to trust myself to figure out what I need, get the support I require and put in the work to get to mastery.

Earlier this year I facilitated a 4-week group coaching cohort. Before launching the cohort, I took some time to reflect on the ideas and resources that have been particularly powerful for my clients and then I created a coaching journey based on these ideas.

What a beautiful and profound experience!

The feedback from participants was so positive that I compiled the resources into a self-paced suite of products for navigating life’s challenges.

Whether it’s building our ability to understand and regulate our emotions, gaining clarity on our next steps, or managing our time and energy, UChange provides guidance and practice for navigating life with greater ease.

Who doesn’t want more of that?
