Medicine is a calling like no other. Physicians carry immense responsibility, holding space for life, illness, and human suffering daily—often while navigating a culture that expects them to set aside their own humanity to keep the system moving.
On World Su***de Prevention Day, we honor the memory of those we’ve lost and stand with the clinicians carrying heavy burdens in silence.
According to data compiled by the American College of Emergency Physicians and JAMA Psychiatry, male physicians die by su***de at roughly 1.4 to 2 times the rate of the general population, while female physicians face a rate up to 2.5 to 4 times higher than non-physician women.
This crisis is deeply complex and deeply personal. While no single variable or structural change explains every individual tragedy, we must acknowledge the broader environment: Systemic burnout, administrative friction, and the erosion of professional agency create unnecessary weight on an already demanding profession.
True physician wellness requires reverence for the individual, community compassion, and a commitment to building a healthcare landscape where healers are actually cared for.
To every doctor, resident, and provider: your life, your health, and your well-being matter. 💜
