Do abortion pills expire? Yes — but the date may not mean what you'd assume.

Shelf-life estimates for mifepristone and misoprostol vary by reference, generally falling in the 2–5 year range from manufacture. The expiration date is a manufacturer guarantee that the medication retains its full potency under labeled conditions — not a "this becomes harmful" date. The risk past expiration is reduced efficacy, not danger.

Real-world studies suggest both medications often retain effectiveness past their printed dates if stored properly. That doesn't mean ignore the date — it means understanding what it does and doesn't tell you.

Original packaging, cool and dry, out of direct sunlight or heat. If your pills are near or past their date, talk to a clinician before using them.

Buying ahead is reasonable. Asking how long they last is, too.

Can abortion pills be detected at a medical visit? No.

Mifepristone and misoprostol don't appear on standard drug screens, routine blood work, or any typical hospital test. And medication abortion is medically indistinguishable from a miscarriage — same symptoms, same lab results, same treatment protocols.

If you need ER care for any reason, "I'm having a miscarriage" is medically accurate, and the care protocols are identical either way.

The privacy is already built into the medication itself.
