Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms out there. This May, we are celebrating Motherhood and Mental Health, two topics we hold dear at Spoken Black Girl.

My passion for spreading awareness has grown with me as I raise my two children. This year, I want to highlight children’s mental health in particular because good mental health starts with our children and providing them with safe childhoods where they can grow, be supported, and given every opportunity to thrive.

Join me on IG Live for a Q&A with author Dr. Candicee B. Childs on May 19 @ 8 PM EST as we discuss her new Children’s book Cece’s Sour + Sweet Journey to Medical School!

I look forward to coming together in community with you all!

In honor of National Poetry Month, we are sharing a wonderful selection of poetry by Taveesha Guyton.

More about Taveesha:

Taveesha Guyton is a poet and author whose work lives at the intersection of longing, healing, and emotional truth. Her writing is raw, reflective, and deeply human created for anyone who has ever felt too much and said too little. She writes to give language to the feelings people struggle to name.

ON THIS DAY - MARCH 11, 1959

The opening night of A Raisin in the Sun on March 11, 1959, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York City marked a historic moment in American theater. Written by Lorraine Hansberry, the play became the first Broadway production written by a Black woman and the first drama by a Black playwright produced on Broadway in nearly two decades. The production starred Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, and Ruby Dee, whose performances brought Hansberry’s story of the Younger family to life.

Set on Chicago’s South Side, the play explored the aspirations, frustrations, and resilience of a Black family striving for dignity and opportunity amid racial segregation and economic hardship. On opening night, audiences and critics immediately recognized the production’s emotional depth and social importance. The play challenged prevailing stereotypes by presenting complex Black characters whose struggles reflected universal human concerns about family, identity, and the pursuit of a better life.

The success of A Raisin in the Sun signaled a turning point in American theater. Its opening night demonstrated that stories centered on Black experiences could command mainstream stages and audiences, paving the way for future generations of Black playwrights and performers.
