We watched the sun rise and set in Far Rockaway. Queens carnival was everything we thought it would be. Fun, families, and so much more. Endless music and topped off with a firework show to end the night. We are  still trying to catch our breath

Day 322 of 1,000 | 1000 Days to Build a Birth Center Campaign 

It has been a week and it has all been in the name of breastfeeding and infant feeding support! 💛

As I was wrapping up a prenatal session, I received the exciting news that our story had aired on CBS News, highlighting the work we are doing to improve access to breastfeeding support through the development of our birth center.

It is always an honor to have our work recognized, but the real win for us will be reaching families before they encounter the barriers.

Before the misinformation.

Before the doubt.

Before the joy and excitement of welcoming a new baby is overshadowed by other people’s fears, opinions, or assumptions about what a family can or cannot do.

Breastfeeding is a natural process, but that does not mean it always comes naturally. Families deserve support, education, encouragement, and someone willing to walk alongside them through the journey.

And we are honored to be that support. 💛

What made this moment even more special was that, while I was out in the community providing support, a community member who had previously participated in one of our Stork’s Nest events happened to catch the CBS News segment and captured the moment which happened to coincide with Charline Day 8/27 recognized in Queens, NY. 

This is why we do the work. We show up, we build relationships, we plant seeds, and sometimes we get to see those seeds come full circle in the most unexpected ways.

Because breastfeeding support should not begin when a family is already struggling.

We want to meet families early, prepare them, empower them, and remind them that they do not have to navigate this journey alone.

The work continues this Saturday at Breathe Queens. Catch our lactation session at 3:00 pm 💛

Day 321 of 1,000 | 1000 Days to Build a Birth Center Campaign 

We ran into our summer intern and led our weekly support group.

Aunty IBCLC entered the chat today and supported two Queens getting ready for their lactation journey. 2 states 1 goal to tackle this breastfeeding journey.

Shout-out to the king that was in the background with the assist and questions.  We all learned together and could not having ended our Black Breastfeeding Week support session on a better note.

Day 320 of 1,000 | 1000 Days to Build a Birth Center Campaign 

It will all work out! This is the message I have black and brown families for Black Breastfeeding Week. The theme this year is We All We Got. For those who know me personally we live that theme out everyday in our one on one consultations, support groups, and community baby showers. 

There are enough people telling you what you can't do. I am here to show you that you can.

A Monday well spent with the National Perinatal Taskforce in honor of Black Breastfeeding Week. I hope our session was helpful and brought ideas and even deeper questions on how we can collectively improve breastfeeding initiation and duration rates for Black and Brown families.

Day 318 of 1,000 | 1000 Days to Build a Birth Center Campaign 

Kid’s Day at the US Open was everything we thought it would be and more. So many families, so much fun, and so much history all in one place.

What made the day even more meaningful was learning about the history of the Women’s City Club and its connection to the 1939 World’s Fair, where the Dickinson-Belskie Birth Series was featured.

As I walked the grounds of the US Open in Flushing Meadows Corona Park the very same grounds where the World’s Fair once took place I couldn’t help but wonder: What would those women say about the state of maternal health today?

What advice would they give me as I work to pave a new path for birth centers here in Queens?

More than 100 years after the opening of the first birth center in New York City, Queens remains without this groundbreaking model of care. And yet, the vision, advocacy, and determination of the women who came before us remind me that progress often begins with someone willing to imagine what does not yet exist.

We are proud to continue the story, honor the legacy, and write a few new chapters of our own.

The future of birth in Queens is being built and we are just getting started.
