Healing through Humanities at UCI To cultivate compassion and empathy in future healthcare providers through shadowing, observing medical classes, and discussing medical-humanities works.

Healing through Humanities was established in 2012 by Monica Multani as an informal discussion section for students enrolled in Dr.Johanna F. Shapiro’s Directed Group Studies. In her course, Dr. Shapiro guided students in the art of doctoring, the methodology by which future health professionals could heal patients through compassion, empathy and understanding. The goal of our club is to cultivate compassion in future health professionals through exposure to medical practice, education, art and humanities in the hopes of furthering humanistic healthcare. We hope with the recent establishment of the Medical Humanities Minor on campus to further that goal and to help grow the presence of the Medical Humanities on campus.

Thanks to those of y’all who were able to make it to HtH’s end of the year social :,)! We announced superlatives and watched a video looking back on the 21-22 school year made by our graduating vice prez, Paolo 🤩. Then, we played a round of bowling at Bowlero –we were all rusty but remained supportive while having a good time and that’s all that mattered 😂😇. But whether you were able to join us or not, we’re grateful that you decided to put some of your time into HtH and helped us have a wonderful year ❤️ Hope to see you next year too, or if you’re moving on from undergrad – congrats to you 🎓

Thank you to everyone that came out to our last meeting of the year💟! We handpainted an HtH poster with a handprint from each person, wrote wholesome yearbook-style notes to each other, and gave grad cords to our graduating seniors 🥺💞. To everyone following us: thank YOU for being a part of HtH, even if you just came out a couple times or had schedule conflicts with meeting times – we see you and appreciate you! Have a great rest of the academic year, good luck on finals, and we'd love to see you next year (if you're not graduating) 😊!!

HtH's general meeting tomorrow night (https://uci.zoom.us/j/95092138756) will feature Dr. Brianne Donaldson presenting on the topic of feminist bioethics and how it relates to being a compassionate healthcare provider🧑‍⚕️! Hope to see you there to listen & learn with fellow club members :). Here is a summary of the topic below (beautifully written by our secretary Candice 😌):
Historically, the principle-based, virtue ethical theories have been dominant, but recently, Carol Gilligan's study of gender differences in thinking have brought feminist ethics into mainstream philosophical discussion. Gilligan contrasts the two ways of thinking, with virtue ethics, the recently dominant theories, being an ethic of justice (masculine) and bioethics an ethic of care (feminine). The ethics of care line of thinking is especially important in healthcare, as it would strongly affirm a professional's heartfelt dedication to a patient, while an ethic of justice approach would subject individuals to detached, dispassionate moral thinking.

In Paolo's words, this book is "a record of someone's online diary during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Wuhan. I thought this was informative of one person's experience throughout the initial lockdowns at the start of the pandemic."
