Newport Community Chanting

Newport Community Chanting Until further notice, the Newport Community Chanting group is not meeting. Thank you. (6/21/24) What is chanting? For more information contact 401-519-8154.

We are a community chanting group that is open to all voices and forms of spirituality. We meet once a week and our common purpose is to chant together and promote peace. Some of our chants are from all over the world and in different languages. There is much scientific evidence on the positive effects of chanting. Chanting is to sing words using repetitive musical notes. It's common in many spiri

tual practices throughout the world. Chanting is a form of meditation - it helps to clear the mind, relieve stress and connect to the present moment. The group is led by Carol, Meghan and Kate Dutton, a family trio who love chanting. Parking is available across the street in the church lot. The event is free, donations are welcome and will go towards Emmanuel Church community meals. Please see updated summer schedule on our FB page.

Newport Community Chanting Group presents Thupten Tendhar from URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, on Saturday, May 14, 2016 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.

Thupten Tendhar is a Tibetan Buddhist Geshe and a Certified Kingian Nonviolence Trainer at URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies. He is also an instructor as well as a Ph.D. student in Education at the University of Rhode Island. He spent over 20 years studying, meditating, and chanting in a major Tibetan monastery reestablished in southern India.

From hundreds of Buddhist chanting, Thupten’s favorite few are OM MANE PEDME HUM, mantra of compassion for universal peace and happiness; OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SWAHA, mantra for protection to free self and others from fears and dangers; and TAYATA OM BHEKANDZE BHEKANDZE MAHA BHEKANDZE RANDZA SAMUNGATE SOHA, mantra for physical and emotional healing.

Thupten is also a poet and some of his poems are published in both Tibetan and English periodicals. His first poetry book “Peace – Rhythm of My Heart” is published by the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies. Thupten dedicates his life to promoting education, nonviolence, inner-peace, and human rights for Tibetans and the global community.

Although his selection of chanting comes from Buddhist tradition, Thupten invites people from any faith or no faith to participate in this special event. He hopes to generate collective energy that may contribute to harmony, peace, and happiness in the world today for a better tomorrow.

Donations for the workshop are accepted to support URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies and its effort to educate and train many peacemakers in multiple countries. For more information call the church office at 401-847-0675.
