💊 ASK YOUR PHARMACIST FRIDAY 💉

“Can I bring old medications and used syringes to the pharmacy?”

I get versions of this question all the time, and the answer is: sometimes, but not necessarily.

Not every pharmacy is an authorized medication take back location, and used needles, syringes, and lancets require a different type of disposal.

So, what should you do?

💊 Unused or expired medications:
A medication take back location is generally the best option. Authorized collection sites may be located at participating pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, or law enforcement facilities. Always check before showing up with your medications.

📦 No take back location nearby?
Depending on the medication, there may be safe options for disposal at home. Some pharmacies also offer mail back envelopes or medication disposal products, such as DisposeRx. Do not automatically flush medications. Only certain medications are recommended for flushing when a take back option is not readily available.

💉 Needles, syringes, and lancets:
These require separate sharps disposal. Never place loose sharps in your household trash or put them into a medication take back box. Use an appropriate sharps container and follow your local disposal guidance.

📍 For my Northern Kentucky neighbors:
Northern Kentucky Health offers local resources for safe disposal and can provide free sharps containers for unwanted or used syringes.

Cleaning out your medicine cabinet? Have a container of used syringes sitting around because you are not quite sure what to do with them?

Please do not guess. There are safe options available, and your pharmacist can help point you in the right direction.

Because medication safety does not stop when you are finished taking the medication.

🧬 SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: Genetic Testing

Your genes can influence more than you may realize, including how your body responds to certain medications, how you process nutrients, and even pathways related to metabolism, stress, sleep, and overall wellness.

At Medicinlogic, genetic testing is pharmacist-guided, which means you’re not just handed a report and left to figure it out on your own.

We offer:

Pharmacogenomic Testing
Helps identify how your genes may affect medication response, side effects, effectiveness, and dosing.

Functional & Wellness Genetics
Provides insight into areas such as nutrient metabolism, weight regulation, inflammation, stress response, sleep, and other wellness-related pathways.

And if you’re wondering, “Which one do I even need?”, you don’t have to know before reaching out. We can start with what you’re experiencing, what questions you have, and what you’re hoping to learn, then determine which option makes the most sense.

Know your genes. Know your meds. Know your health.

From Your Friendly Pharmacist 💙

When was the last time you actually looked at your vitamin D level?

Not just heard, “It’s normal.”

Your vitamin D level is measured with a 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] test, and knowing your actual number gives you a much better starting point for a conversation about whether supplementation makes sense for you.

And if you ARE taking vitamin D, do you know which kind?

💊 Vitamin D2 = ergocalciferol
💊 Vitamin D3 = cholecalciferol

Both can raise vitamin D levels, but D3 generally raises and maintains levels more effectively. High-dose D2 is also commonly seen as a prescription product, while D3 is widely available over the counter.

Why does any of this matter?

Because vitamin D isn’t one-size-fits-all.

Your starting level, symptoms, medications, health history, diet and current supplements all matter when deciding whether you need vitamin D and what dose makes sense.

And yes, energy can be part of that conversation. Low vitamin D can be associated with fatigue, and correcting a true deficiency may help some people feel better. But fatigue has MANY possible causes, so I don’t want you assuming vitamin D is automatically the answer either.

My friendly pharmacist reminders:

☀️ Check your level.
💊 Know what you’re taking.
🧪 Make a plan based on your individual needs.
🚫 And don’t assume more is better just because you can buy it over the counter.

Sometimes “normal” is the beginning of the conversation, not the whole conversation.

Not sure exactly what you need? That’s okay. That’s kind of the point.

Medicinlogic has grown quite a bit over the past year, but the mission behind every service is still the same: making your healthcare and medications a little easier to understand, access, and navigate.

Maybe you have questions about your medications.
Maybe you want lab work without jumping through hoops.
Maybe you’re curious whether your genetics could be affecting how you respond to a medication.
Maybe you’re supporting an aging parent and could use a pharmacist in your corner.
Maybe you just need your prescription picked up and brought to your door.

You don’t have to figure out which box you fit into before reaching out.

Start with the question. We’ll help with the next step.

That’s personalized pharmacist care. 💙💊

Ask Your Pharmacist Friday 💊

I cannot tell you how often someone asks me for a refill and, when I ask which medication they need, the answer is:

“I don’t know. Just refill everything.”

Or…

“It’s the little pink pill.”

“I think it’s for my blood pressure?”

“My doctor told me to take it.”

And every time, I think: we can do better than this.

If you’re putting something into your body every single day, you deserve to understand what it is, why you’re taking it, what it’s doing, how it helps you, when to take it, and what you should be watching for.

Medications shouldn’t just be something we mindlessly add to our routine because a prescription was sent to the pharmacy.

And if you don’t know? Please don’t be embarrassed to ask. You don’t know what you don’t know. That’s exactly why your pharmacist is here.

Bring us your medication list. Bring the bottles. Ask us which one is for blood pressure. Ask why one should be taken at a certain time. Ask what side effects to watch for. Ask how it actually works. Ask whether you still need it.

Don’t just know what you take. Know why you take it.

And if you have a medication list in front of you right now and realize you don’t know what everything is for, let’s fix that.

Ask your pharmacist. Or reach out to me. This is exactly what I’m here for. 💙

Making sense of your medications.

MONDAY SERVICE SPOTLIGHT: MediDrop 🚙💊

Sometimes getting a prescription picked up is just one more thing on an already very long list.

Especially when you’re caring for someone else.

Maybe you’re helping manage medications for an aging parent. Caring for a spouse or loved one. Juggling appointments, meals, work, kids, and everything else that comes with being the person someone depends on.

Let us take one thing off your plate.

With MediDrop, Medicinlogic offers local prescription pickup and delivery, helping get medications from the pharmacy to your doorstep when getting there yourself isn’t easy or simply doesn’t fit into the day.

But MediDrop is more than medication delivery.

Your medications are delivered by a pharmacist or pharmacy technician…someone who understands medications and the pharmacy world, not simply someone transporting a package.

And when your delivery is made by a pharmacist, there’s an added opportunity to ask questions, talk through concerns, or get a little extra medication support right at your doorstep.

And you certainly don’t have to be a caregiver to use MediDrop. Maybe you’re home sick, transportation is difficult, your schedule is packed, or you simply need a little help this week.

Today is a special day around here. 💙🥳

We’re celebrating our founder, Dr. Jordan Smith, and one year since Medicinlogic officially began serving our community.

What started with one simple mission, to help people make sense of their medications and navigate healthcare with confidence, has grown because of the trust, encouragement, and support of so many incredible patients, families, colleagues, and friends.

Over the past year, we’ve been honored to answer questions, celebrate victories, provide guidance, and become a trusted resource for so many.

Thank you for believing in this vision and for being part of our first year.

Please join us in wishing Jordan a very happy birthday, and here’s to another year of making healthcare more personal, understandable, and accessible. 🎈🎂
