A counterintuitive piece of pre-IVF preparation: sudden, extreme habit changes can work against you.

Quitting coffee overnight, canceling your social life, white-knuckling 40 rules — abrupt overhauls are stressful, and sustained cortisol is itself a biological input that affects s***m development and hormone signaling.

What moves the biology is alignment, not perfection: fertility-supporting choices 70–80% of the time, sustained across the full 74–90 day window.

This is a conversation I have almost every week.

She did everything to the dot. The cycle still failed. And at 41, the first question is always the same: what did I miss?

Here is what I want every woman sitting with that question to know. Half of the embryo's DNA comes from s***m. A semen analysis counts and measures — it often does not tell the whole story. S***m DNA fragmentation is worth looking into before the next cycle, for both of you.

Even a perfect egg needs healthy s***m.

If you get a s***m DNA fragmentation (DFI) result, here is how it is commonly interpreted:

Below 20% — generally considered optimal.
20–30% — elevated; associated in studies with lower implantation rates and higher early-loss risk.
Above 30% — high; worth a direct conversation with your fertility team.

A DFI result is one factor, not a verdict. And it is modifiable — the sample reflects the 70–90 days that built it.

Early miscarriage. Arrest by day five. Chemical pregnancy.

Very few people are talking about s***m DNA fragmentation — and it is one biological reason these outcomes can happen, even when everything else looked normal.

Instead of waiting for the next failure, be proactive. Full breakdown: https://cycledecoded.com/why-did-my-ivf-fail-everything-looked-normal/

Before another IVF cycle, four things worth reviewing:

1. Has male-factor evaluation gone beyond one basic semen analysis?
2. Has s***m DNA fragmentation been discussed — not assumed to be fine?
3. Are both partners preparing during the same 74–90 day window?
4. Are stress and sleep treated as biological inputs, not afterthoughts?

The full pre-cycle review is in the article: https://cycledecoded.com/why-did-my-ivf-fail-everything-looked-normal/

Next cycle is 12 weeks away. Your closest friend turns 40 on Friday. Should you go? Should you drink? How do you explain if you do not?

Here is the truth, so you can make an educated decision instead of worrying alone:

A single drink is not harmful to the overall outcome. Egg quality is shaped by habits that compound across the full 12 weeks — every day counts, and no single evening decides it.

And stress is biology too. Worrying raises cortisol, which has been linked to final egg maturation. That is not a reason to fear your own feelings. It is a reason to understand them, ask questions, and decide with knowledge instead of guilt.

Go to the party. Celebrate your friend.

Imagine a s***m developing inside a tiny, fragile bubble — and oxidative stress as the rain beating on it.

Oxidative stress is the primary, best-documented driver of s***m DNA fragmentation. And the umbrella over that bubble is built from lifestyle choices, every day, across the 90 days s***m develop.

No magic pill. An umbrella, built daily.

S***m DNA fragmentation is found in roughly 30–40% of samples after a failed IVF cycle — and it is usually tested only after failure. If at all.

It measures something a routine semen analysis does not: the integrity of the genetic material inside the s***m. And it is modifiable — the biology responds to lifestyle inputs across the 70–90 days s***m take to develop.

Before another cycle, it is a reasonable factor to discuss with your fertility team.

Day 1 to day 3, an embryo runs on the energy stored in the egg.

Around day 3, that supply runs out — and the embryo has to switch on its own genome to keep growing. Half of that genome comes from the father.

This is one biological reason embryos can look perfect on day 3 and arrest by day 5. The first three days say nothing about the father's DNA. Day 4 and day 5 do.

For the male partner: ask about a DFI test — the DNA fragmentation index.

"Everything looked normal" and "everything was evaluated" are two different statements.

A standard workup measures what it measures. But s***m DNA integrity, inflammatory load, chronic stress, and the 74–90 day preparation window sit outside the standard panel.

When a cycle fails with normal results, the reason is often not mysterious. It was simply never measured. Full article here: https://cycledecoded.com/why-did-my-ivf-fail-everything-looked-normal/
