“Women, however, often present with more subtle and varied symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, headaches, and mood disturbances,” she adds.
“These signs are often attributed to hormonal changes or life stages, especially around pregnancy and menopause, rather than investigated further for sleep disorders.”
So, women may be given inappropriate treatment for what doctors think are hormonal conditions ― thus worsening the OSA, leading her to try to get more of the wrong medication, which then worsens the condition again.

It often goes underdiagnosed in women.

As we embark on the year of 2024, Sleep Integrity Solutions would like to highlight the significance of addressing sleep apnea and its potential implications on our health. Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. It is crucial to recognize the link between sleep apnea and various health conditions, such as:

- Type 2 diabetes
- Weight gain
- Metabolic syndrome
- Adult asthma
- Acid reflux
- Brain fog
- Daytime sleepiness
- Car accidents
- Memory loss
- Depression, and more.

Understanding the comprehensive effects of sleep apnea on our overall well-being can serve as a motivator to promptly seek appropriate treatment.

Having sleep apnea can increase risk for having a stroke, and having had a stroke might make a person more likely to develop sleep apnea. The most common form of sleep apnea, OSA raises the risk of an ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood vessel that delivers blood to the brain becomes blocked. Sleep apnea more than doubles the risk of stroke for middle-aged and older men and also increases the stroke risk in middle-aged and older women. Experts have suggested several possible explanations for why people with OSA have a greater risk of stroke:
-Reduced blood flow to the brain
-Limited oxygen
-Effects on other risk factors for stroke
-Defect in the structure of the heart

It has been suggested that people with mild-to-moderate OSA can show performance degradation equivalent to 0.06 to 0.08% blood alcohol levels, which is the measure of legal intoxication in most states. Most pilots will not fly intoxicated, but OSA sleep deprivation may be causing the equivalent effects. Further exacerbating the problem are time zone changes and post-flight alcohol consumption, which can inhibit wakefulness. The NTSB reported a sixfold increase in the risk of aviation crashes for pilots with OSA. For this reason, the FAA is requiring many pilots to either be tested and treated for sleep apnea, or risk disqualification or unemployment. Dentists specialized in sleep medicine (American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine) are trained in the use of oral appliance therapy for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and snoring.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, usually because of an uncomfortable sensation. It typically happens in the evening or nighttime hours when you're sitting or lying down. Moving eases, the unpleasant feeling temporarily. Restless legs syndrome, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, can begin at any age and generally worsens as you age. It can disrupt sleep, which interferes with daily activities.

Unfortunately, RLS and sleep apnea are two conditions that are more likely to develop as a person ages. While anyone at any age can be affected by either condition, those over the age of 40 are more likely to have OSA, and when it comes to RLS, many who experience severe symptoms are older, with symptoms typically becoming more frequent and lasting longer as time goes on. One study found that clinically significant RLS (meaning symptoms present at least two to three days per week) was found in 8.3% of sleep apnea patients.

Sleep apnea and chronic pain are peas in a pod as far as comorbid conditions go. They are interconnected, with one heightening the other. People in pain struggle to sleep well, and people who don’t sleep well experience more pain. This is to say sleep apnea doesn’t cause pain, but it can intensify it if you’re already suffering. That being said, chronic pain does not necessarily lead directly to sleep apnea, but sleep disruptions due to chronic pain is a fact of life for many people.

Additionally, some patients with fibromyalgia or other chronic pain conditions are being referred to sleep specialists for a polysomnography, the primary diagnostic tool of sleep apnea. Anecdotally, chronic pain patients will tell you that some of their worst flare-ups occur after a poor night of sleep. When dealing with sleep apnea and chronic pain, it is crucial to focus on treatment and therapy for sleep apnea that addresses the poor sleep and the pain that occurs as a result.

In people with sleep apnea, breathing during sleep is interrupted many times a night, often resulting in nighttime snoring—and daytime symptoms of sleep deprivation. People who snore but feel refreshed the next day, though, may just have “simple snoring,” not sleep apnea. Snoring that’s not caused by sleep apnea can be caused by a number of things, including:
-Older age, which can cause more relaxed throat muscles
-Nose or throat conditions, such as a deviated septum (when the wall that divides the nose is pushed to one side) or enlarged tonsils
-Sleep style, especially sleeping on your back
-Use of alcohol, other depressants or muscle relaxants close to or at bedtime
-Being overweight, which leads to poor muscle tone and more tissue around the neck

More than 25 million adults in the United States are believed to have moderate to severe OSA, which is comparable to the prevalence of diabetes and even higher than asthma, she said. However, about 75% of severe cases are undiagnosed. People who suffer from sleep apnea repeatedly stop breathing during sleep, then often gasp for air. Sleep deprivation can cause a number of short- and long-term medical issues, so it's important to recognize symptoms and seek appropriate treatment.

Sleep apnea can strike either gender at any age, although risk is higher if you are:
-Male
-Overweight
-Age 40 or older
