If you walk into a standard grocery store or pharmacy, the vitamin shelves are packed. But here is a clinical truth: Not all vitamins are created equal.
When a supplement label lists a cheap, synthetic form of a nutrient, your body has to work overtime just to convert it into a usable form. If your gut is inflamed or you have common genetic variations (like MTHFR), that cheap vitamin will likely pass right through you without doing a thing.
As a functional pharmacist, the very first thing I look at is the chemical form of the nutrient.
Here are some examples of what to look for on your ingredient labels:
Vitamin B12
❌ Avoid: Cyanocobalamin
✅ Look for: Methylcobalamin
Why it matters: Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic form of B12 attached to a tiny cyanide molecule. Your body has to strip the cyanide away to turn it into "methyl" B12. Buying Methylcobalamin means giving your body the biologically active, ready-to-use form that immediately supports brain health, nerve function, and energy.
Folate / Vitamin B9
❌ Avoid: Folic Acid
✅ Look for: L-Methylfolate (or 5-MTHF)
Why it matters: Folic acid is synthetic. Up to 50% of the population has a variation in the MTHFR gene, meaning their bodies cannot properly convert folic acid into active folate. Unconverted folic acid can float around your bloodstream and block your cells from absorbing the real stuff. L-Methylfolate bypasses this entirely and goes straight to work protecting your nervous system and cellular health.
Magnesium
❌ Avoid: Magnesium Oxide
✅ Look for: Magnesium Glycinate or Magnesium Malate
Why it matters: Magnesium oxide is incredibly cheap to manufacture, but it has an absorption rate of only about 4%. The rest just stays in your digestive tract, often causing diarrhea. Magnesium Glycinate is bound to a calming amino acid (glycine), making it highly absorbable, easy on the stomach, and fantastic for sleep and muscle relaxation.
