Delphi Statement #11: “A simple pinch test tells doctors a lot.” 💜

The Kaposi-Stemmer sign is a quick physical exam used to help evaluate swelling. During the test, a healthcare provider gently pinches and attempts to lift a fold of skin—typically near the base of the second toe.

If the skin can be lifted, the test is considered negative. The Kaposi-Stemmer sign is usually negative in Lipedema because the condition typically spares the feet.

A positive sign—when the skin cannot be lifted—may suggest lymphedema or lipolymphedema. While this simple test can provide a helpful clinical clue, it cannot diagnose or rule out a condition by itself and should be considered as part of a comprehensive evaluation.

💜 Meaningful pain relief matters—and the LIPLEG research offers encouraging evidence.

Published in The Lancet, this randomized trial found that participants receiving lipedema reduction surgery were approximately **9 times as likely to achieve meaningful leg pain relief** as those receiving conservative treatment alone.

At 12 months, **68% of the surgery group achieved a reduction of at least 2 points on a 0–10 pain scale, compared with 8% of the conservative treatment group.**

These findings support surgery as a treatment option for lipedema pain. Individual results vary, and treatment decisions should consider each patient’s symptoms, goals, and surgical risks.

Delphi Statement #10: “Easy bruising is common.” 💜

Do you frequently notice bruises but cannot remember how they happened? Easy or unexplained bruising is commonly reported by people living with Lipedema.

The small blood vessels within Lipedema-affected tissue may be more fragile, allowing bruising to occur after minor pressure or contact that might not leave a mark on someone else.

Not everyone with Lipedema experiences every symptom, but frequent bruising—especially when combined with disproportionate tissue, tenderness, heaviness, or swelling—can be an important piece of the diagnostic picture.
