The long-awaited LIPLEG trial has officially been published in *The Lancet*. This randomized clinical trial compared Lipedema reduction surgery with complex decongestive therapy and found that surgery provided a substantial improvement in Lipedema-related pain and quality of life.

For years, patients and providers have called for higher-quality evidence surrounding Lipedema and its treatments. This study brings important attention to the disease and provides meaningful data that may help shape the future of Lipedema care.

Every surgical plan begins before the procedure starts. ✍️

During this patient’s pre-op markings for Lipedema Reduction Surgery to the buttocks, hips, and lateral thighs, Dr. Wright explains how he plans around the patient’s natural anatomy.

When a patient has a natural “hip dip,” the goal is not to aggressively suction that area. Removing too much tissue could make the indentation appear more pronounced. Instead, Dr. Wright carefully evaluates the surrounding contours and identifies the Lipedema lobules along the hips that need to be addressed.

These markings serve as a detailed map for surgery—helping Dr. Wright target diseased tissue while preserving natural curves and creating a smooth transition between the lateral thighs, hips, and buttocks.

Lipedema surgery is never a one-size-fits-all procedure. Each surgical plan is tailored to the patient’s anatomy, tissue distribution, symptoms, and treatment goals.

We’re beginning a new educational series reviewing each consensus statement from the Lipedema World Alliance’s position paper on the definition and management of Lipedema.

The first statement is simple—but incredibly important. Lipedema is not merely a cosmetic concern or a result of personal choices. It is a chronic disease that requires recognition, appropriate care, and long-term management.

This statement achieved 95.77% agreement among international experts participating in the consensus process. Recognizing Lipedema as a chronic disease is an important step toward improving education, research, diagnosis, treatment, and support for those living with it.
