The Think Tank. The Dwell Time. The Pause. (It’s The Good Stuff!)

We humans move too fast. I say it in my yoga teaching, I say it when I’m doing bodywork, & I ALWAYS say it in my riding instruction.

Dr. Stephen Peters — Why the horse needs time to process:

“In training, that pause or dwell time is vital to the horse assimilating information.”

(Peters explains that allowing a horse to lower its head, relax, and transition toward a calmer nervous-system state helps it process what has just happened).

Taking time to allow this process is vital! You’ll see me doing it daily. If you take lessons from me, hire me to help your horse, or watch me doing bodywork for your horse - expect it! We must stop rushing into the next thing, or feeling like it’s a waste of time “waiting” for the horse to finish this process.

Steve Peters and Martin Black come to Maine yearly - they are hosted by Shinanatu Farm in Brunswick. Every second is worth an audit - and should you be lucky enough to get a spot to ride, your horsemanship will be changed forever. They have books too - look em up and have a read. It’s truly fascinating and means a ton to your equine partner. 🤠

The Autumn Influx:
Why Fall is the Ultimate Season to Adopt Your Next Equine Partner

As the leaves change and the cooler autumn weather rolls into Maine/NH/New England, equine rescues and sanctuaries face one of our toughest seasons of the year. 🍂

Before the harsh winter months hit and hay costs rise, owner surrender requests spike dramatically. It's a heartbreaking reality that fills rescues to maximum capacity just when resources are stretched the thinnest.
But where there is a challenge, there is also an incredible window of opportunity for future horse and donkey owners.

Fall is actually the perfect time to adopt! 🐴

When you open your heart and your barn to a rescue horse or donkey right now, you gain three full seasons—fall, winter, and spring—to slow down and focus entirely on your relationship. Without the immediate pressure of spring trail rides or heavy training schedules, you can utilize these quieter months to build a true partnership.

Think of it as the ultimate off-season bonding time for:
• Groundwork: Creating a foundation of clear communication, boundaries, and mutual respect.
• Liberty work: Developing a willing partnership built on choice, voice, and connection.
• Trust building: Spending zero-pressure time grooming, learning their body language, and mastering daily routines together.

By investing this time into a deep connection during the colder months, you are setting yourself up for an incredible transition. When next spring rolls around, you won't be starting from scratch—you will be a rock-solid team ready to take on the season with complete confidence.

Not ready to adopt but still want to help us through this season? 🙌
We are looking for dedicated volunteers to join our barn family! Whether it's helping us winterize the sanctuary, assisting with daily chores, or spending time grooming and handling our residents, your hands and heart make a massive difference during this busy autumn influx.

If you’ve been thinking about expanding your herd or giving back to a great cause, don't wait for spring. Help a rescue breathe a sigh of relief this autumn, and give yourself the gift of a bond that truly lasts.

✨ Trust. Transformation. Thrive. ✨

Ready to take the next step? Send us a message directly here on our Kritter Ridge Equine page to learn more about our available residents or to find out how you can get started as a volunteer!
