Giuliana's Journey

Giuliana's Journey This page is dedicated to Giuliana's journey and fight against Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome with faith, family, and a whole lot of feistiness!

Giuliana was genetically diagnosed with Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome (SDS) prior to her birth. SDS is a genetically inherited condition that primarily affects bone marrow, the pancreas, and the skeletal system. In Giuliana's case, she has had to overcome issues related to her body's ability to produce a pancreatic enzyme needed to absorb nutrients and problems producing new blood cells. Because of t

his, she is on an enzyme prior to each feed, which consists of a high-calorie formula and added MCT oil for additional calories. She has also had several blood and platelet transfusions to compensate for her body's inability to produce them. Giuliana will need a bone marrow biopsy in the near future and may very well require a bone marrow transplant during her life. The main hurdle Giuliana is currently facing, however, relates to the skeletal aspect of this disease. She has a restricted ribcage characterized by short, flared ribs. Because of this, she is unable to fully expand her lungs and expel carbon dioxide. At the beginning of January, it became clear that the only way to bring Giuliana home safely was with a tracheostomy. She got her tracheostomy on January 22nd and we are counting down the days before she gets to join her big sister at home!

Welp as if May wasn’t chaotic enough 🤦🏻‍♀️ This little joker decided to fracture her humerus in two places 😳 We love her independence and fearlessness, but unfortunately that resulted in a tumble trying to get down from our big front room chair 😬 She’s ok and luckily isn’t casted, but when they told us she needed to keep it in a sling, I laughed. Any ideas on how to get her onboard with that?! 😆 Happy Friday all 🩷🦄

The recovery has been a little longer and harder than we’d hoped, but Giuliana finally made it back to school today!! Poor kiddo is still pretty puffy but the swelling has gone down significantly (you can use your imagination on how big her cheeks and lips have been the past couple of days 😬) We’re pretty sure she has an infection brewing and that’s the cause of the continued discomfort/irritability, but hoping a quick bout of antibiotics will have her back to her normal spicy self in no time. 😊🦄

Thank you to everyone that reached out, said a prayer, and/or sent out some positive vibes after seeing the pre-op photo of Giuliana playing with the legos from Bricks of Hope on my personal social media page 😊

Quick update: Giuliana went to the hospital today to have some major dental work done in the OR. Unfortunately we have found that her SDS has predisposed her to dental issues…a lot of dental issues. 🤦🏻‍♀️ The enamel and makeup of her teeth are both pretty terrible. Her dentist has reached out to multiple colleagues, some of which are professors, and none of them have encountered patients with issues like Giuliana (shocking…🦄) She had a great time in pre-op, which was a blessing for us since her surgery time got pushed back by about an hour. She spent about 3 hours in the OR and from all accounts, did great. No issues with anesthesia this time around 🤗 Her dentist was able to get through everything she needed to…and only had to pull ONE tooth which was wayyyy less than I was expecting. The recovery process was a little less fun. 😬 She came out of anesthesia pretty quick and was a FULL terror. 😣 The post-op team had to give something to calm her down because she was pretty inconsolable. It was pretty evident when those drugs hit 😆 From full MMA fighter to docile little lamb. Luckily the recovery and post-op teams picked up on her desire to get out of there as quickly as possible. The discharge process was pretty quick and we were able to leave about an hour after she got to recovery!! She fell asleep for a bit on the ride home (which was great given the traffic we sat in…) Giuliana is home and resting with all expectations of returning to school and dance class tomorrow! ❤️

Shout out to Advocate Children's Hospital for an amazing experience! I started receiving calls from the surgical nursing staff last week. They not only asked about Giuliana’s medical “stuff” but also about her as a kid 😊❤️ The Child Life Specialist was amazing and really helped with the transition from pre-op to the OR. Giuliana’s at an age where she understands what is happening so this has become so much more important to us. All in all, so thankful for all of the medical staff today 🦄

Guess whose potassium is finally starting to trend upward! (It’s still low but not critically low) This was especially great news since it meant her port was finally de-accessed and she GOT TO GO TO SCHOOL TODAY!!! Also pretty great that she doesn’t need labs again until Tuesday so she gets a fun-filled weekend AND gets to enjoy all things Halloween 👻 on Monday! Thank you for the continued well-wishes. Giuliana is officially back to her- normal, super sassy, huge personality, quite opinionated, makes her voice heard -self 😬 Maybe send some prayers for the rest of us 🤣 Happy Friday 💕🦄
