A bonsai pot for a Pagoda Dogwood seedling I dug up in my garden. This is local terracotta I usually use for glaze on stoneware, but it makes great plant pots

I started burning for my new ash glazes today: some dogwood, maple, oak, and remnants of aster, blue vervain, big bluestem, and hairy mountain mint. I burn only a few times a year: since I live in a highly populated area, I do not want to bother my neighbors. Each burn yields only a few cups of ash, which is not a lot.

And another work cycle begins. My work consists of functional ware with an occasional vase thrown in for fun.

Next week will be cooler, and I will fire up Benito for a full bisque and a couple of cone 10 glaze fires. I also have to begin burning last year’s garden and collecting the ash. Meanwhile, my brush piles have sheltered lots of unknown creatures this spring!

I’ve applied to a show at the end of summer; and if not accepted, I will have a studio sale/Open House in September. ❤️

June 2026 garden in Oak Park, Illinois…so green! Most of these plants are Illinois prairie/savanna/meadow natives, so they are mid-summer bloomers. The garden provides food and shelter year round: these 2026 plants will stand through the winter to feed and shelter, but in mid-spring 2027, the dried stalks will be cut to make room for new growth. The dried remnants are burned later in the summer, and the ash will be used on my fall 2027 pots!

This is one of my brush piles waiting to be burned. It’s made up of my 2025 garden remnants, tree and shrub trimmings, and some American wisteria vines from the backyard. I’m itching to burn it, but I always wait until mid-June because there are likely lots of creatures raising young and using it for shelter now. I’m out of ash from my 2024 garden, and I’m excited to see what this batch of ash has in store!

Still my favorite! Last fall when David and I were in Kyoto, I gathered some stones and a few chunks of dried clay. I mixed it with my local clay and ash, and the results are gorgeous. I am so happy I kept this one for myself: all the other pieces sold
