WHICH ONE ARE YOU?
A QUESTION FOR SEEKERS OF THE TRUTH

There are people in this world who cause problems…
And there are those who work at finding solutions.
Which one are you?
There are people who cause pain and suffering wherever they go…
And there are those who bring compassion and healing to those in need.
Which one are you?
There are people who seek revenge on those who have hurt or cheated them…
And there are those who choose to forgive.
Which one are you?
There are those who criticize and belittle the shortcomings of others…
And some who encourage and support their strengths.
Which one are you?
There are those who offer the world negativity and anger…
And others who bring hope and laughter.
Which one are you?
There are people of prejudice who divide and separate us because of our differences…
And people of love who unite and appreciate us because of those same differences.
Which one are you?
There are people in this world who search for every excuse to hate…
And others who embrace every opportunity to LOVE.
Which one are you?
And in the end, when they are gone,
There are some who will have left behind them trail of suffering and destruction.
And others who leave for the world a legacy of love and kindness.
WHICH ONE ARE YOU…HONESTLY?

A recent fb post came through my newsfeed: “I’m done helping others and being there for them. I’m never appreciated.”

My response: “Why do you help others? For the joy of doing so or for the recognition? If it's for the joy and you stop, then you deny yourself feelings of happiness. If you do it for the appreciation then simply tell them you'd like to be acknowledged.”

While I understand the hurt this person feels, I do not give solely for the well-being of the other, although this is of great importance to me. I also give because God continually blesses me and expects me to give generously to others as well .

Very few selfless givers ever receive the gratitude due them. For me, that's not sufficient reason to stop, for in doing so I deny the very nature of who I am - who God created me to be. Giving brings me pleasure and in withholding it I cause my own unhappiness. God gives freely and generously to us with no requirement of recompense. Why are we unwilling to do the same?

Perhaps it’s time to examine our motives for giving. If they truly come from the heart then you have already received your reward. If they are done so out of obligation or for glory, your motives are impure. Ask God to change your heart: “Lord, help me to be a reflection of your perfect love and generosity in this world. Amen.”
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” – 2 Corinthians 9:6
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” – 2 Corinthians 9:7
“God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” – Hebrews 6:10

When we insist that life conforms to our desires rather than allow it to just be what it is, we struggle and suffer. It's like trying to force a stream to flow in the opposite direction. It's tremendously difficult and requires an enormous amount of our time and energy. And for what purpose? To exhibit our power and authority over something? But when we let the water move as God intended it, we can either enjoy it or remove ourselves from it. So it is with life: life becomes so much easier when we allow it to unfold in its natural order. Our time and energy can be more wisely spent either departing from what does not support us and/or using what is readily available to enrich our lives. Thus, living in perfect harmony with all God’s creations.

We often hear about the need to forgive others for their infractions against us. Yet rarely do we address the flip side of that coin by recognizing the times we have hurt others and need to ask for their mercy.

Here are five simple steps to ensure a heartfelt apology. (Be sure to also watch my inspiring 3-minute video, link below, on forgiveness. It’s a compelling letter from God to His Children.)

Five “A’S” of an APOLOGY:
1. ACKNOWLEDGE your mistake. Take ownership for your actions and their impact on the other party.
2. ACCEPT responsibility. FULL responsibility. No buts, excuses or blame.
3. APOLOGIZE. Offer sincere remorse for the pain, suffering, or hardship you have caused them.
4. AMENDS. Make them. An apology without recompense is incomplete.
5. AVOID. Refrain from ever repeating the mistake.

An apology is a sign of deep compassion and concern for the person we have offended, courage as we risk possible rejection or condemnation, and inner strength for the often-gut-wrenching introspection and self-analysis we have conducted on ourselves. Additionally, it is the path to emotional and spiritual healing, inner peace, and a possible reconciliation.

1 John 1:8-9 “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us.”

Pray your way through every day.

Last night, we had 6 vultures sitting in our trees. With small dogs, I was hesitant to take them out. But my little Toadie came to the rescue. Watch his heroic efforts. (SOUND ON)

Relationships are hard! Here’s a simple way to make them easier & more enjoyable.

One thing I’m most grateful for in my marriage is humor. I didn’t get the romance I was seeking or the deep meaningful conversations. Rather God blessed me with a man who makes me laugh & who provides a space for me to be the clown that I am. It’s a skill we use frequently.

All marriages face challenges & are disappointing in areas. Skills such as communication, problem solving, sensitivity &so on enable us to navigate those challenges & build stronger relationships. But not all marriages have those skills. For my husband & I, we rely on the power of humor: silly, goofy, laugh till you pee-in-your-pants hilarity.

Humor is one of life’s greatest gifts. It diffuses tension, puts people at ease, helps put things into proper perspective allowing couples to more successfully find solutions to their unique challenges. This one skill has enabled Mac & I to evade fighting & more fully enjoy our time together. 30 years & I still love being married to him.

Additionally laughter strengthens the body's natural immune system, reduces stress hormones, improves cardiovascular health, reduces pain, relaxes muscles & more. It alleviates depression & stress, relieves fear & anxiety, puts us in a more positive optimistic mood, encourages resiliency, & intercepts, minimizes, & heals anger. One little chuckle has the power to accomplish all this & more. A perfect remedy for happier relationships & healthier lives! And it’s FREE!

Don't take yourself or others or life too seriously. Look for the humor in every situation. Create moments that allow you to laugh till your face hurts. Life was meant to be enjoyed. Humor is your greatest ally.

My favorite day this week because of a DAK moment:
I went food shopping on Wed as I typically do. On the way up the highway, I passed a police car “hiding” alongside the roadway. The thought “I should stop and give him one of my small wooden crosses” crossed my mind but I continued heading north. Then God tapped me on the shoulder. “Turn around and do it”, He instructed. That’s a voice I don’t ignore. I pulled up behind the police car, walked up to his window which he rolled down. “May I give this to you?” I inquired. “Of course,” he replied with a smile. “I truly appreciate everything you police officers do. Thank you for keeping our communities safe.” I began heading back to my car. “I’m going to say a prayer for your continued safety,” I stated. He responded with a fervent, “Thank you!”
Ah, that felt good! Thank you, God!

A few minutes later I pulled into the parking lot of Shoprite. Walking towards the front door, I passed an older disheveled man approaching his vehicle, groceries strewn haphazardly in the bottom of his shopping cart. “Do you need a bag for your groceries?” I inquired. He had forgotten to bring his. I pulled one out of my bag of bags and handed it to him. He was appreciative. Then I reached in my handbag and removed a small magnetic cross book marker I keep for just such a purpose. “May I give this to you? It has a passage from Scripture on it.” “Of course!” he replied with a smile. “You can never have enough Scripture!” We exchanged in one final cheerful smile then went our separate ways.

Small. Insignificant. Overlooked. Acts few people consider worthy yet they are some of the most powerful messages of love and caring we can exchange with one another. “I see you. You matter to me. You are sacred.” This is the message I try to convey whenever I engage in a DAK: Deliberate Act of Kindness.
What’s your DAK today?

I have never been a "why me?" person. I've been through hell multiple times - things that should have destroyed me but didn’t. I’ve never felt sorry for myself, never wallowed in self-pity. Rather, in every situation, I always asked God, "What do you want me to do with this?" In other words, how do I use this experience for good - for myself, for others, and for all of humanity? And now, even more so, I inquire “How can I use this hardship to glorify You, Lord?” It is more than simply learning the lessons of the suffering; it is about applying them. What God has taught me, I must now share with others for their enrichment and, most importantly, to give glory to Him. Always.
What a joy and honor it is! Thank you, Lord!

Genesis 50:20 “But as for you, you thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.”
1 Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.“
