Is social media helping your mental health or hurting it?

For many Black Americans, social media serves as a source of connection, culture, community, and information. But constant exposure to distressing news, online debates, misinformation, and unrealistic comparisons can also contribute to stress, anxiety, emotional fatigue, and burnout.

In this thought-provoking article, AAWP Board Chair Monique LeNoir explores the impact social media can have on our mental and emotional well-being and offers important insights on protecting our peace while staying informed and connected.

🧠 Your mental health matters. Your digital wellness matters.

Let’s change the conversation around brain health.

The African-American Wellness Project is honored to support Memory & Thought Conversations / Addressing Stigma - an initiative dedicated to increasing awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive health in Black and Latino communities.

Amyloid buildup in the brain, which can lead to memory and thinking challenges over time, may begin decades before symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease appear. Early awareness, open dialogue, and proactive health choices can make a meaningful difference.

We invite you to read, watch, learn, and share this important conversation with your family and friends:

🧠 Brain health conversations matter - and they need to happen in our communities.

The African-American Wellness Project is proud to participate in Memory & Thought Conversations / Addressing Stigma, a powerful community-centered initiative focused on brain health awareness in Black and Latino communities.

By 2030, nearly 40% of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will come from our communities. What many people don’t realize is that changes in the brain linked to Alzheimer’s can begin up to 20 years before symptoms appear.

That’s why early conversations are so important. Talking openly about memory, thinking changes, testing, and healthy lifestyle choices can help reduce stigma and support earlier intervention and care.

šŸŽ„ We encourage you to watch this important conversation and share it with your loved ones, caregivers, and community members: https://youtu.be/LZPgooHEXM0?si=lh1W5wN5KGxF0Id9

Together, we can protect minds, strengthen families, and normalize conversations about brain health - one conversation at a time.

Let’s talk about it!

Too often, conversations around memory, and brain health, are met with silence, but silence can’t heal what we don’t address.

At the African American Wellness Project, we’re creating space for real conversations about memory, thoughts, and the experiences that shape our brain health. Because understanding what we feel and why we feel it is a powerful step toward healing.

Stigma has long been a barrier in our community, rooted in history, culture, and misconceptions, but it doesn’t have to define our future. When we speak openly, support one another, and seek knowledge, we begin to break those barriers down.

✨ Your voice matters
✨ Your experiences are valid
✨ Brain health is essential

Let’s continue to normalize the conversation, uplift one another, and prioritize wellness, together.

Let’s talk about it. šŸ§ šŸ’¬

Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are impacting the Black community at disproportionately high rates, yet conversations about brain health and memory loss too often happen in silence.

At the African American Wellness Projectļæ¼, we believe awareness, education, and open dialogue are essential to protecting our health and supporting our families. Through the AlzInColor campaign, we’re helping create space for conversations about brain health, early detection, caregiving, and reducing the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s in the Black community.

A powerful new story from Washington Informer highlights the real-life consequences of gaps in Medicaid coverage for families managing asthma. One missed notice. One paperwork error. And suddenly, life-saving medications become out of reach - putting lives at risk.

For too many families - especially in Black communities where asthma rates are higher and outcomes are worse - these barriers are not just frustrating, they are dangerous.

At the African American Wellness Project, we believe no family should have to fight this hard just to breathe. We remain committed to educating, advocating, and ensuring access to the care our communities deserve.
