Coronary Artery Disease (CAD): Know the Warning Signs

Coronary Artery Disease happens when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to your heart. Over time, this can reduce blood flow and increase the risk of a heart attack.

Early warning signs may include:

✔️ Chest pressure, tightness, or discomfort
✔️ Shortness of breath
✔️ Pain or discomfort in the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw
✔️ Unusual fatigue, especially with activity
✔️ Dizziness, sweating, or nausea

Don’t ignore new or unexplained symptoms. Early evaluation can help identify heart disease and guide the right care.

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD): The Leg Pain You Shouldn’t Ignore

Leg pain isn’t always just a muscle or joint problem. Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) occurs when narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to the legs and feet—and it can be a sign of broader cardiovascular disease.

Common signs of PAD include:

🚶 Leg pain or cramping while walking that improves with rest
🦶 Numbness, weakness, or coldness in the legs or feet
🩹 Slow-healing sores on the feet or legs
🎨 Changes in skin color or temperature

PAD is linked to increased cardiovascular risk, including heart attack and stroke. Early evaluation can help identify circulation problems and guide appropriate care.

Don’t ignore persistent leg pain. Your circulation matters.

Why Is Heart Disease So Common in Florida?

Several factors can increase your risk of heart disease:

🫀 Aging — Heart disease risk increases as we get older.
🩺 High Blood Pressure & Cholesterol — Both can damage arteries over time.
⚖️ Obesity & Inactivity — Extra weight and lack of exercise can strain the heart.
🍬 Diabetes — High blood sugar can damage blood vessels and increase heart risk.
🥗 Unhealthy Diet — Too much salt, sugar, and saturated fat can affect heart health.
🚭 Smoking — To***co damages blood vessels and increases heart disease risk.

❤️ The good news? Many risk factors can be managed. Regular checkups and healthy lifestyle choices can help protect your heart.

Pneumonia Vaccination Matters More If You Have Heart Disease:

Pneumonia isn’t only a lung problem—it can put significant stress on the cardiovascular system, especially in people with existing heart disease.

🫁 Why does pneumonia matter for the heart?

A serious respiratory infection can cause inflammation, lower blood oxygen levels, dehydration, and increased heart rate. This added stress may worsen conditions such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or arrhythmias.

💉 Pneumococcal vaccination can help.

Pneumococcal vaccines help protect against Streptococcus pneumoniae, a bacterium that can cause pneumonia and other serious infections.

🫀 If you have heart disease:

✔️ Stay current on recommended pneumococcal vaccination.

✔️ Discuss your vaccine history during routine visits.

✔️ Seek medical attention for persistent breathing difficulty, chest discomfort, or worsening symptoms.

Prevention is an important part of protecting both your lungs and your heart. Talk with your healthcare provider about which pneumococcal vaccine schedule is appropriate for you.

Sleep & Heart Health:
Did you know that poor sleep can affect more than just your energy levels? It may also increase your risk of serious heart conditions.

Sleep apnea and chronic poor sleep have been linked to:
❤️ High blood pressure
❤️ Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
❤️ Heart disease and heart failure
❤️ Stroke and other cardiovascular complications

⚠️ You may be at higher risk if you:
Snore loudly or gasp during sleep
Feel excessively tired during the day
Have high blood pressure or obesity
Have diabetes or existing heart disease

Don't ignore the signs.
If you or a loved one experiences symptoms of sleep apnea or ongoing sleep problems, talk with your healthcare provider. A sleep study may help identify underlying issues and support better heart health.
