Okay, forget your to-do list for a minute.

You have $20, 30 minutes, and the only requirement is to make today more fun. What are you doing?

Are you getting ice cream, buying a blind box, wandering around a bookstore, or getting an unnecessarily fancy coffee? Or are you doing something completely different?

This is your reminder that fun doesn’t have to cost a lot, take all day, or wait until the weekend.

Sometimes you just need 30 minutes of “screw it, let’s have some fun” time.

So let’s take a tiny break from adulting together. And don’t forget to tell me what you are doing with your $20.

Things I refuse to be too old for as an elder millennial woman. And before anyone asks: No, I will not be putting away the Squishmallow.

Somewhere along the way, women got handed this ridiculous rulebook about what we’re supposed to stop liking as we get older.

Apparently, we’re supposed to stop wearing graphic tees.

Stop carrying fun purses.

Stop decorating for Halloween like a 9-year-old with a credit card.

Never put ridiculous charms on our bags.

And definitely stop bringing home giant squishy animals.

Well. I have decided the rulebook is stupid.

I am an adult woman. I pay bills. I make appointments. I know what a 401(k) is. I can also own a Hirono bag charm and a Squishmallow.

Getting older doesn’t mean you have to become beige, boring, practical, and deeply committed to neutral accessories.

Especially for those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s, maybe a little nostalgia, playfulness, and ridiculousness is exactly what we need in this exhausting stage of adulthood.

You don’t outgrow the things that make you happy.

Now tell me, what are YOU refusing to be too old for? I want the weird answers.

It’s 100 degrees in September, so we’re officially taking childhood nostalgia indoors.

If you’re an elder millennial woman who remembers Lisa Frank, mall food courts, bedroom concerts, sleepovers, and spending an unreasonable amount of time making things sparkling … this one’s for you.

Here are 5 ways to feel like a kid again without actually feeling childish:

💜 Make Jell-O pudding and color with crayons

💜 Bedazzle something you already own

💜 Sing into a hairbrush like you’re headlining a sold-out concert

💜 Build yourself a ridiculously cozy sleepover fort

💜 Recreate a nostalgic mall night at home

Because maybe what we’re chasing isn’t actually childhood. Maybe we’re chasing that feeling of being completely absorbed in something for no productive reason whatsoever.

And honestly? After decades of adulting, I think we’ve earned it.

What nostalgic thing would you add to the list?

Maybe we don’t need another productivity hack.

Maybe we need to go outside and play.

There’s something about nostalgic activities that can instantly reconnect us with the version of ourselves who knew how to have fun without needing a reason.

Run through the sprinklers

Binge old cartoons you loved as a kid

Have a backyard movie night

Go swing on a swing set

Buy the nostalgic candy you haven’t had in years.

Especially when adulthood, burnout, and the endless responsibilities of life have made everything feel so serious, these little moments of play can be a beautiful reminder that joy doesn’t have an age limit.

You are allowed to be silly, playful, and do things just because they make you happy.

Your inner child would love an invitation to come out and play for a little while.

Bored with being an adult? Same.

Somewhere between paying bills, managing everyone’s schedules, working, doing the laundry, and surviving perimenopause, a lot of us forgot that we’re actually allowed to have fun.

And no, I don’t mean another “productive hobby” you can turn into a side hustle. I mean real, unnecessary, slightly ridiculous FUN.

Buy something from the toy aisle.

Go roller skating.

Have a sleepover.

Make something badly.

Do something purely because it makes you happy.

Because adult life doesn’t have to be so serious, and you don’t have to earn your joy.

If you’re a burnt-out elder millennial woman who misses the childhood joy, playfulness, nostalgia, and whimsy of your younger years, consider this your permission slip.

What’s one fun, completely unnecessary thing you want to do? Tell me in the comments.
