Labor built America; and Black labor helped build the foundation. 🇺🇸
This Labor Day, we honor the generations of Black workers whose hands, minds, strength, skill, and perseverance helped move this nation forward; often without receiving the recognition, opportunity, or equity they deserved.
Their labor was essential. Their contributions are undeniable. Their legacy lives on.
We honor the work. We remember the workers. We celebrate the legacy.
-Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Oklahoma City Chapter
So much of the work that keeps America moving happens beyond our view, yet in plain sight. In the unseen actions and service of those that clean our classrooms, cook the meals, and do the work so important to our existence yet so subtle it is almost invisible.
Behind every system, service and infrastructure we rely on people whose labor makes it all possible. For generations, Black workers have been integral to that story—often doing essential work without equal recognition, opportunity or protection.
The Pullman porters and maids are one powerful example. Their labor helped define the nation’s rail experience, even as they endured demanding conditions and racial discrimination. In response to exclusion, Black workers organized, fought for dignity and helped expand opportunity for those who came after them.
This Labor Day, as you move through your day, look a little closer. Notice the people behind the service, the systems and the spaces we depend on—and honor the hands that keep them moving.
