being told your labs are “normal”… is almost as annoying as a slap in the face or still feel exhausted, unclear, dizzy, or your hair is still shedding more than usual 😒
queue, looking at: ferritin🩸
ferritin = your iron stores, not just whether you are anemic.
the issue: many lab ranges flag ferritin as “normal” even when it’s sitting at the very low end. and for many people, specifically women, low levels can come with very real symptoms.
questions to ask:
• is your ferritin “normal” or actually optimal for you?
• are you losing iron faster than you’re replacing it? like heavy bleeding?
• could gut issues be affecting absorption? like inflammation or low stomach acid as part of the picture?
sometimes the real question isn’t “do I need to supplement with iron?”
the better question is: “why are my iron stores low in the first place?”
if you’ve been feeling off but keep hearing “you seem normal and everything’s fine,” this might be a lab worth (re)visiting with your provider.
what was your ferritin last time you checked, and were you told it was normal?
