Your weight is only one number.

Before I recommend a treatment plan at Standard, I want to understand more than what the scale says.

That’s why every new client gets a baseline lab evaluation. These labs help us look at blood sugar regulation, insulin resistance, cardiovascular risk, inflammation, thyroid function, kidney and liver function, and nutritional status.

The point isn’t to order more tests just for the sake of testing.

It’s to establish a baseline, identify problems that may need attention, and make better clinical decisions before treatment starts.

I broke down the 9 labs in the Standard panel in this carousel—including what each one tells us and why I include it.

If you’re interested in clinician-guided weight loss, GLP-1 therapy, metabolic health, nutrition, strength, and long-term health, you can find more Standard content here:

On Instagram I share shorter educational content and practical health information.

On YouTube I go deeper into topics like insulin resistance, visceral fat, GLP-1 medications, weight management, and preventive metabolic health.

Metabolic Syndrome: The 5 Risk Factors You Should Know

Metabolic syndrome isn’t a single disease. It’s a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors that tend to occur together.

The five criteria include:

• Increased waist circumference
• Elevated triglycerides
• Low HDL cholesterol
• High blood pressure
• Elevated fasting glucose

Meeting 3 or more of these 5 criteria is considered metabolic syndrome and is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stroke.

The important part is that these are measurable. They can be tracked over time, and many can improve with changes in nutrition, physical activity, body composition, sleep, and appropriate medical treatment.

Know your numbers.

Normal glucose doesn't always mean normal metabolism.

Fasting glucose and A1c tell us a lot about glucose. Fasting insulin can add another piece of information-how much insulin your body may be using to maintain those numbers.

That's why it's part of the lab evaluation at Standard.

Look beyond the number.

Your blood sugar can look normal while insulin resistance is already developing.

The reason: your body may be producing more insulin just to keep glucose in range.

Same glucose. Different metabolic picture.

Your fasting glucose can look normal while your body is already producing more insulin to keep it there.

In Part 2 of Standard’s metabolic health series, I explain insulin resistance, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, and why glucose alone doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Standard is a Nurse Practitioner-led weight loss and preventive metabolic health practice serving Orange County, New York.

I realized I talk a lot about weight loss and metabolic health, but I don't think I've ever actually shown what working with Standard looks like.
So this is it.
You don't call me and immediately get handed a prescription. We talk first. We figure out where you're starting, get some actual data, and then decide what makes sense.
After that, we keep checking in and see whether what we're doing is actually working.
Yes, losing weight is usually why someone reaches out. I get that. But six months from now, I want to be able to show you more than a smaller number on the scale.
That's really what I'm trying to build with Standard.
Anyway, swipe through. This is the process.
