Birth Vibes is so, so good, y’all! 🌸 I tandem read the audiobook + hardcover and truly loved every minute of it.

does a beautiful job of explaining labor and delivery lingo & the perspectives of your care team in an accessible way. Birth Vibes is perfect for both first-time parents and those on their second or third rodeo, looking to make sense of their prior births or feel more prepared for their next one.

As a birthworker, Birth Vibes is undoubtedly a resource I’ll be recommending to my clients — I even tabbed my own copy so clients that borrow it can reference my favorite parts & must-know bits of info!

And birthwork aside: as a mother who has experienced birth trauma, this book was a healing and validating read. I cried many times over, and it was truly cathartic 🫶🏼

If I would’ve read this book while 18-years-old and pregnant with my first baby, I would have perceived my traumatic birth in an entirely different, more positive light. Needless to say, experiencing a shoulder dystocia that wasn’t explained in the moment or debriefed with me afterward really rocked my world.

It is so reassuring to know that with reading even just a little of this book, millions of people will know that it’s actually okay to ask questions about what happened or is happening to them. That is POWERFUL!

Jen doesn’t shy away from the fact that birth trauma often originates from the way we’re treated and spoken to during the experience. She provides tangible ways for patients to be an active participant in their care, and I couldn’t love it more! Her Birth Vibes Profile included in the book is fantastic & I’m super excited to share this framework with my pregnant friends 😊✨

Truly a five-star book and fabulous resource for those who are expecting, working with pregnant folks, or looking to better understand their own hospital birth experience.

You’ve probably heard of early and active labor, but have you heard of the “rest and be thankful” phase of labor? 🌸

There’s a misconception that reaching 10cm dilated means it’s time to jump right into pushing, but for a lot of folks, there’s a brief break before it’s time to meet your baby.

This is what we refer to as the “rest and be thankful” phase of labor!

It occurs after transition (the back-to-back surges that take you from 8-10cm) but before actively pushing. During this time, it can actually be normal for contractions to space out or temporarily stop.

This pause doesn’t mean anything is wrong.

It is simply an invitation to rest — and sit with the knowledge that you’ll be meeting your baby so soon! 🪷

Keep this bit of info in the back of your mind if you find yourself nearing the end of labor & wonder why you’re seemingly catching a break, when you’re so close. Use this time to sip some water, cool off with a wet washcloth, & connect with your partner. Positions that work with gravity can be great during these moments!

Early labor: the unsung hero of the birth process 🤰🏻✨

Usually the longest phase of labor, early labor takes you from a closed to 5cm dilated cervix. There’s a lot of change going on behind the scenes!

When you feel your first contractions & you’re wondering “is this it???”, sometimes there’s a rush of energy paired with a desire to try to get things going. (Curb walking — yes, I’m talking to you. There’s a time and a place, and it usually isn’t early labor) 😜

Buuuuut this phase of labor is actually the best time to rest, fuel yourself for active labor, and find a good rhythm that helps you cope with contractions. Think of it as preparing your energy stores for a marathon! 🏃🏽‍♀️

Early labor is the time to sleep, eat, and hydrate. Watch your comfort shows, get a pedicure, or snap some final bump pics to distract yourself.

This phase is your body’s way of easing you into the labor process — how thoughtful, right? 🌸

Knowing that early labor is the longest phase of labor can help set your expectations, find a “contraction coping routine” that works for you, and ensure you’ve got energy to carry you through.

One of the most awesome aspects of being a doula? Being a bridge between my clients & their providers — and this looks a lil different for everyone!

Sometimes this bridge comes in the form of helping you write down a list of topics to discuss with your midwife or OB at your next appointment.

Sometimes, that bridge is in the form of hallway conversations while you labor, reminding the care team of your wishes & worries so you can stay in the zone.

💬 Other times, it looks like a text with symptoms asking, “should I be concerned?” + the validation of whether or not you should make your way to L&D.

In my role as a doula, I never replace your medical provider, but I can be someone who urges you to seek medical attention when something seems a lil suspicious.

I’d much rather you give me a quick call asking if you should go to L&D instead of being full of anxiety waiting on an online portal reply or until your next appointment. I say it often: when I’m your doula, please “bug” me! I want to hear it all because I care 🫶🏼

And sometimes, those passing, seemingly insignificant comments can clue us in to a problem brewing. (See the last slide for some examples!)

While attending births & empowering parents is my jam as a doula, helping folks be more of a participant in their care is at the heart of that. After all, you’re the expert of your own body & also know your baby best! Sometimes all you need is another person in your corner that trusts you, too.

As your doula, I’m more than happy to be someone who helps ease your worries when all is well, and also be a gentle nudge when it may be time for extra care. 💕
