Don't be caught getting frustrated by these common issues before having surgery.
Here are ways to avoid them:
🚨Unclear Expectations & Misinformation-
✅Ask your surgeon to explain what is and isn’t possible for your anatomy.
✅Write down your goals (with pictures) to help you and the surgeon align.
✅Take time to digest the consultation; don’t rush your decision.
🚨Medical & Health Surprises-
✅Provide a full medical history, including all medications, supplements, herbs, and prior surgeries.
✅If you smoke, quit weeks (even months) ahead; smoking impairs healing and increases complications.
✅Undergo any required labs or exams (EKG, bloodwork, cardiac, etc.) well in advance.
🚨Anxiety, Fear & Mental Strain
✅Discuss with your surgeon or anesthesiologist your fears about anesthesia or complications.
✅Have a support person accompany you to visits to help you remember details and provide emotional support.
✅Use relaxation techniques (meditation, light walks, journaling) in the weeks leading up.
🚨Logistics & Home Setup Overlooked
✅Prepare your recovery space (pillows, easy access to water, phone, medications, dressings).
✅Pay close attention to the financial side beforehand, make sure your payment, insurance, or financing is in place so you don’t face surprises.
✅Plan ahead: have post-op caregivers for at least the first few days.
🚨Surgical Risks
✅Ask if you’ll need drains, compression garments, or prophylactic antibiotics, and understand how to manage them.
✅Be alert to warning signs post-op (fever, worsening pain, swelling, odd bleeding) and report them early.
🚨Poor Wound Healing & Scarring
✅Optimize your nutrition (plenty of protein, vitamins, minerals) in the weeks before surgery.
✅Keep good blood circulation (light walks, mild activity as allowed pre-op).
🚨Postoperative Pain, Discomfort & Dissatisfaction
✅Understand that swelling and bruising are normal; final results often take months.
✅Maintain good communication with your surgeon — ask about staged revisions or touch-ups only after full healing.
