The Niyamas: How We Care for Ourselves 🌿
Last week we covered how the Yamas guide how we relate to the world around us. The Niyamas turn our attention inward.
They are five practices that invite us to cultivate a healthier, more intentional relationship with ourselves.
The five Niyamas are:
🌿 Saucha: cleanliness and clarity
🌿 Santosha: contentment
🌿 Tapas: discipline, commitment, or purposeful effort
🌿 Svadhyaya: self-study and reflection
🌿 Ishvara Pranidhana: letting go and trusting something greater than ourselves
Like the Yamas, these aren't commandments or rules to follow perfectly. They are how we learn to be aware, noticing our habits, choices, attitudes, and relationship with ourselves.
Over the next few posts, we'll explore each Niyama and consider what these ancient teachings might apply to modern life.
Because practicing yoga isn't just about changing our bodies.
It's also about changing the way we move through life. ❤️
