What is khushu in Salah?
In the Hanafi madhhab, khushūʿ (خشوع) in ṣalāh refers to inner humility, focus, and presence of the heart before Allah, reflected outwardly in calm and composed actions.
Summary:
* Definition: Stillness of the body + attentiveness of the heart (avoiding distraction).
* Ruling: Khushūʿ is wājib (necessary) to strive for, but not a condition for validity—the prayer is still valid without it, though deficient in reward.
* Outward signs: Minimal movement, lowered gaze, no unnecessary actions (like fidgeting).
* Inward state: Reflecting on meanings, feeling awe, خوف (fear), and رجاء (hope).
* Disliked actions (makrūh): Excessive movement, looking around, playing with clothes, or anything that breaks focus.
* Goal: To combine proper fiqh of actions with قلب حاضر (a حاضر heart).
Bottom line: In the Hanafi school, khushūʿ completes and beautifies the prayer—it’s not what makes it valid, but it’s what makes it accepted and impactful.
