🇯🇲 Who said Jamaican food can’t be healthy?
Real talk, island food gets a bad rap for being heavy and fried. But done right, it’s some of the most protein-packed, nutrient-dense eating out there.
Here are my Top 5 healthy Jamaican meals that bring BIG flavor and still keep you on track 👇🏿
1️⃣ Steamed Fish + Callaloo 🐟
Lean protein, iron, and fiber. Steamed, not fried.
2️⃣ Jerk Chicken + Ground Provisions 🍗
Skinless jerk chicken paired with yam, dasheen, and green banana.
3️⃣ Ackee & Saltfish 🥬
Jamaica’s national dish loaded with healthy fats and quality protein.
4️⃣ Stew Peas + Jasmine Rice 🍲
Kidney beans and lean beef packed with fibre.
5️⃣ Escovitch Fish 🌶️
Pan-seared fish with peppers and onions. Bake it instead of deep-frying it.
The secret? Steam it, bake it, or grill it — not fry it. Pair your protein with ground provisions instead of heavy rice and watch the magic happen. 💪🏿
⚠️ Be mindful of your seasonings, oils, and sauces.
Use dry seasonings, herbs, spices, sea salt, and plenty of vegetables to maximize flavor without unnecessary calories.
For cooking oils, I recommend avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, or coconut oil in moderation. Personally, I prefer oil sprays because they help control portions and calories while still giving great flavor.
If you use ketchup or soy sauce, choose sugar-free ketchup and low-sodium soy sauce whenever possible.
