Many people assume an AED will be available during a cardiac emergency. That’s not always the case.

A device may be nearby, but difficult to locate or inaccessible when it’s needed most.

Join SaveStation and Parent Heart Watch for a discussion on improving access to AEDs in our communities and the real-world challenges that can limit access during a cardiac emergency.

A North Texas teenager received a Citizens Life Saving Award after performing CPR until EMS arrived to help save his friend’s life after he collapsed during basketball practice.

At the hospital, doctors discovered the teen had an undetected congenital heart condition. His story is a reminder that cardiac emergencies can happen without warning, even in young people who appear healthy.

A 16-year-old student at West Park High School suffered sudden cardiac arrest during band class.

School staff quickly recognized the emergency, called 911, started CPR, and used an AED before paramedics arrived. Their actions helped save his life.

Doctors are still trying to determine what caused his sudden cardiac arrest, and he now has an implanted defibrillator.

“What most of us aren’t usually thinking about when we walk into a building is that the people around us and the equipment in that building could determine whether we live or die,” sudden cardiac arrest survivor Hailey Yentz told North Carolina lawmakers.

The bill focuses on strengthening cardiac emergency preparedness in schools through AED access, training, and the implementation of Cardiac Emergency Response Plans and drills to help save lives.

A 13-year-old North Carolina baseball player is recovering after suffering sudden cardiac arrest during a game.

An off-duty police officer immediately began CPR and called for an AED — but there was not one at the field. Nearby paramedics arrived and used an AED to restore his heartbeat.

AEDs must be immediately accessible at every youth sports practice and game.

After more than two decades of advocacy, Pennsylvania has enacted Greg Moyer’s Law. ❤️

While many advocates helped move this effort forward, this has been an especially long and deeply personal journey for Rachel Moyer and her family following Greg’s death from sudden cardiac arrest during a high school basketball game.

Rachel, co-founder of Parent Heart Watch, helped lead advocacy efforts that resulted in legislation requiring AEDs at school athletic events and practices and requiring schools to develop and practice Cardiac Emergency Response Plans annually.

Save in Illinois! ❤️

A 16-year-old student at Huntley High School is alive today because CPR was started immediately and an AED was used before EMS arrived after he collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest during a track activity.

This is why access to AEDs, CPR training, and emergency preparedness are critical in every school and athletic setting.

In a cardiac emergency:

Call 911. Start CPR. Retrieve and use an AED.

CPR keeps blood flowing to the brain and vital organs.
An AED restores a normal heart rhythm.

Both are needed to increase the chance of survival.

Public guidance shapes real-world response. When AED use is not consistently included, the public is not equipped with the full set of actions required to respond effectively.

Parent Heart Watch is calling for alignment across organizations, including the American Heart Association, to ensure AED use is consistently included as a core step in public guidance—and to support one clear, actionable message:

Call. Push. Shock.
