Someone funny said, “I think speech therapists can always find something to work on!”😂 And the truth is… we can!

But just because there’s something we could work on doesn’t always mean therapy needs to continue.
So, how do you know when it’s time to stop speech therapy?!

In this reel, Jen talks about some of the things we consider when making that decision: age-appropriate speech errors, stimulability, insurance considerations, and whether skills are being maintained outside of therapy.

And sometimes, taking a break can tell us a lot! If a child or adult takes some time away from therapy for holidays, travel, or just life, and comes back maintaining their skills, that may be a sign they’re ready to graduate from therapy!

Ultimately, we want the skills built in therapy to carry over into everyday life without needing continued support.

Wondering if it might be time for you or your loved one to take a break or graduate from speech therapy?

🍎 ATTENTION TEACHERS! 🍎

As you head into a new school year, you’re often one of the first people to notice when a student may be struggling with speech, language, or communication.
In this reel, Jen shares a few things teachers can be on the lookout for when considering whether a student may benefit from an SLP referral. 👀🗣️ And parents, we know it can be frustrating when you feel like your child needs additional support but they don’t qualify for school-based services. That doesn’t necessarily mean there aren’t other options! At SASSKC, we’re here to help answer questions, take a closer look at your concerns, and determine whether additional support may be beneficial.💛

Feeding therapy should never just be about getting a child to take a bite or tolerate a new food. Before progress can happen, there has to be trust between the child and their feeding therapist.

At SASSKC, we want children to feel safe, supported, and respected throughout the feeding process. We pay attention to their emotional cues, build positive experiences around food, and recognize that feeding is about so much more than what’s on the plate.

And sometimes, feeding concerns go beyond the scope of one professional. There may be an emotional component that benefits from support from a mental health professional or play therapist, or a nutritional component where collaborating with a dietitian is an important piece of the puzzle.

Good feeding therapy isn’t about forcing progress. It’s about building trust, understanding the whole child, and knowing when to bring other professionals to the table.💛

That’s how we do things at SASSKC.

Is your child ready for the school year?📚🍎

When we think about being “school ready,” it’s easy to focus on backpacks, school supplies, and first-day outfits. But communication skills are just as important.
Think about whether your child can:

✨ Sit and listen during group activities
✨ Follow directions
✨ Keep their body safe and respect others’ space
✨ Ask for help or advocate for what they need
✨ Communicate bathroom needs
✨ Tell you (or their teacher) about their day

These skills don’t have to be perfect before school starts, but they’re wonderful areas to practice together! In this post, Jen shares simple tips you can start using at home to build confidence before the first bell rings.

If you’re wondering whether your child’s communication skills are where they need to be, you don’t have to figure it out alone. We’re here to help💛

🚨Looking ahead: We’ll be hosting Speech & Hearing Screenings at SASSKC in mid-September! If you’ve been collecting questions or wondering whether your child could benefit from an evaluation, this will be a great opportunity to get answers. More details and registration information are coming soon, with limited appointment spots available.

Save this post for later and share it with a parent who’s getting ready for back-to-school!

🚨Hot take alert🚨

Not every child needs you to match their energy!

Sometimes the most effective thing you can do is slow things down.

By lowering our own energy, we create space for children to regulate, process what we’re teaching, and truly engage with therapy. Learning doesn’t have to be loud or fast to be meaningful. In fact, slowing down often leads to better understanding, stronger communication, and more lasting progress.

Follow us for more takes, tips, and all things SLP!🙌🏼
