‘Everything looks normal.’ If that’s what you heard while still feeling exhausted, foggy, or just off - here’s what nobody explained to you.

A lab ‘normal range’ is built from the average of everyone who got tested, including a lot of other people who don’t feel well either. So landing ‘in range’ doesn’t mean you’re thriving. It just means nothing got flagged. Optimal is the level where your symptoms actually resolve and you feel like yourself, and that's a completely different bar!

The gap between ‘technically fine’ and ‘actually well’ is where so many people have gotten stuck for years.

Normal and optimal are not the same thing. You deserve to aim for the second one.

Save this, and send it to someone who’s been told they're fine one too many times.

Sleep isn't the thing you do when the real work of the day is done. It's when a huge amount of your body's actual work gets done.

While you sleep, your body is repairing - and when sleep is short or constantly disrupted, a lot of that repair simply doesn't happen. Night after night, that adds up. It's one of the most important pillars of health, and also one of the most overlooked.

The good news is that supporting it doesn't have to be complicated. Start with consistency: go to bed and wake up around the same time every day, even on weekends, so your body knows what to expect. And if winding down is the hard part, let sound help - some people fall asleep easier to soft rainforest or nature sounds, others to quiet instrumental or calming music. There's no single right technique. The point is giving your nervous system a cue that the day is over and it's safe to rest.

Protect your sleep like it matters. Because your body is counting on those hours to put you back together.

Why isn't functional medicine usually covered by insurance?

It all comes down to what insurance was built for. Our system is designed around crisis - it steps in once something has gone wrong enough to need intervention. Functional medicine works the other direction. We're looking upstream, investigating why your hormones are off or why you feel depleted long before it becomes a diagnosable emergency. To insurance, that kind of root-cause exploration often gets filed under 'optional' or 'anti-aging' rather than essential care, so most of the time, it falls to cash pay. We know that's a real consideration, and we won't pretend otherwise. Coming in usually means planning to invest in yourself out of pocket.

But here's the honest truth: getting answers, feeling like yourself again, and heading off problems before they become crises? That's rarely money wasted. It's one of the best investments you'll ever make in your own life.

Have questions about what care actually looks like? Ask us. We'll always give you the straight version. wellspotfunctionalmedicine.com.

In case you're new here and you've heard your labs "look normal" while feeling anything but, we want you to know something: you're not imagining it, and you're not being dramatic!

Here's what usually gets missed: Standard labs check a narrow set of markers against a very wide 'normal' range - one built from the average of a lot of people who don't feel well either. So you can land technically in range and still be nowhere near where your body actually functions best. The exhaustion, the stubborn weight, the brain fog, the mood swings, the cycle that's all over the place - those are real signals, even when the paperwork says 'fine.'

You were never the problem. You just needed someone willing to look deeper than the surface. wellspotfunctionalmedicine.com.

Save this, and send it to the woman in your life who's been told she's fine one too many times.

We've said it once and we'll say it a million times: normal labs do NOT mean optimal health. At WellSpot we're not just checking more - we're reading your panels differently.

We're talking the full thyroid panel, complete hormone picture including precursors, In-depth cholesterol, inflammation, and insulin resistance markers. Basically everything your standard workup skipped and everything your reference range never told you.

Because the goal was never just to keep you out of the sick category. We're always trying to get you into the thriving one. wellspotfunctionalmedicine.com.

Maybe you've been told that you need to slow down. Whether it's to alleviate stress, allow yourself to breathe, or mitigate health concerns - you keep hearing "Slow down!"

But maybe for you, that's easier said than done. Maybe nobody's ever taught you HOW to slow down. What does that mean? Meditation? Yoga? Tai chi? Those might work for some, but they're definitely not for everybody.

In nurse practitioner Jacqui's opinion, slowing down is all about taking the time to notice things you normally wouldn't: listening to birdsongs, waving to your neighbors, or feeling grass or sand against the soles of your feet. Slowing down is observing your surroundings using the senses you'd normally ignore, and building a support system to hold you accountable.

We know it's Monday, but we challenge you to take note: what do things FEEL like; SOUND like; SMELL like? What color eyes does your next door neighbor have?

Slowing down is every bit as crucial to your wellbeing as getting your labs checked.

There's something that happens when the person taking care of you actually knows you.

They'll catch the thing that's a little off because they remember what your normal looks like, and even pick up the conversation where you left it, instead of starting from a blank page every time.

We know that can be hard to find in healthcare now. Most of it has gotten big, fast, and forgettable - a different face at every visit; your history living in a file barely anybody's ever read.

WellSpot Functional Medicine is built the other way on purpose. Small enough that you'll know our practitioners by name, and they'll know yours. The relationship isn't a nice extra here - it's part of what makes the care actually work.

So come, be known! wellspotfunctionalmedicine.com.

You're exhausted. As soon as your head hits the pillow, however, your mind takes off!

If that's you, it's worth understanding what's actually going on.

Sometimes it's as simple as low magnesium. Sometimes it's hormones that are out of balance. And very often, it's your cortisol rhythm being off. Here's how that's supposed to work: cortisol should rise in the morning to wake you up, then taper down through the day while melatonin rises at night to wind you down. When that rhythm flips or flattens, you get that tired-but-wired feeling.

The good news is that some of the most powerful ways to support it are simple and free. As the evening comes, help melatonin do its job: dim the lights, put the excitable TV and the late-night scrolling away, and shift into something that actually calms you. Have a real conversation with your spouse. Sit close to the people you love and just hold hands. Hug your kids. Protect that last stretch of the day for peace instead of stimulation.

Most people start their morning on autopilot — toast, cereal, maybe a granola bar on the way out the door. Convenient? Sure. But those carb-heavy, sugar-loaded options set your blood sugar up for a crash before you even get to lunch.

At WellSpot, we talk a lot about building habits that actually support your body — and breakfast is one of the easiest places to start.

The framework we recommend is simple: protein + healthy fats + antioxidants.

Think eggs and sausage, a handful of nuts or some avocado, and a side of fresh berries. That combination gives your body steady energy, supports hormone balance, and keeps cravings in check throughout the day — no mid-morning slump required.

Small shifts in what you eat first thing can make a big difference in how you feel the rest of the day. If you're not sure where to start, that's exactly the kind of thing we work through with our patients.

If you're struggling with anxiety but don't want to jump straight to medication, don't worry! Here are three holistic options that may help:

1). Nighttime strolls. There's something uniquely calming about walking around in the cool of the evening - admiring the sunset, listening to crickets, and breathing in fresh air. Take your walk right after dinner, if you can. That way, you're giving food a chance to digest AND your brain the opportunity to start winding down for the night.

2). Hush your space. Dim the lights, put away the screens, pick up a (calm) book, and relax. Our brains actually shift into overdrive when we're exposed to blue light from our phones for prolonged periods of time, causing us to worry more. That doesn't make falling asleep very easy.

3). Journal. Taking the time to process the events of your day and getting everything off your chest can be greatly beneficial to helping your brain calm down in time for bed. Holding onto thoughts and anxieties and trying to remember it all causes unnecessary stress for your brain.
